Abstract: The thesis entitled ‘Passivization in English and Bhojpuri: A Comparative Study’ is an attempt at identifying processes of the passivization in the Bhojpuri language and comparing them with those in English. The researcher made use of both primary and secondary sources of data. The sample population of the study consists of 60 Bhojpuri native speakers who were sampled for the study by using quoata sampling procedure. Both the structured interview schedule for the selected illiterate and literate informants and questionnaire for the educated ones were developed as tools to collect the data. The questions were the same in both types of tools. After collecting data, it was analysed, interpreted and presented descriptively and comparatively with the help of tables, diagrams and illustrations. The main finding of the study is that when the active sentence has only one object, (i.e. Direct object), the arrangement of the verb with the object takes place according to the person (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and the degree of honour (NH,H,HH) of the object in the passive voice. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with introduction of the study. It consists of general background, reviews of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study and definitions of the specific terms. Chapter two includes sources of data, sample population and sampling procedure, tools for data collection, processes of the data collection and the limitations of the study. Chapter three presents the analysis and interpretation of the data. It deals with the rules of passivization in the English and comparison of the processes of passivization in the Bhojpuri. Chapter four encompasses the findings of the study, a set of recommendations and pedagogical implications.
