Clause Combining in Baram and English: A Comparative Study

Abstract

The research is basically a study of ‘Clause combining’ in the Baram andEnglish, a comparative study. The main objectives of the study are to find out theprocess of clause combining in the Baram language, to compare and contrast withthose of English, and to record the English clause system. The sample populationconsists of 30 Baram people, regardless who know and do not know their own nativelanguage to find out the competent speaker of the language. The research is limited innon-dialectical variation. Quota sampling procedure is the way to select the Barampeople. Two types of research tool i.e. questionnaire and interview schedule are used. In Baram there are their own subordinators and coordinators. However,someboth coordinators and subordinators seem to have been borrowed from Nepali. Thesignificant rules of clause combining in the Baram language is the nominalization ofthe verb of dependent clause. It consists of all together four chapters. Chapter one deals with theintroduction. It consists of the background of the study, the Baram language, Barampeople, sociolinguistic situation, how Baram is getting endangered, a brief sketch ofclause system in Baram brief sketch of clause system in English. It also includesliterature review, objectives of the study and the significance of the study. Chapter two includes the methodology adopted for the study with the toolsandprocess of data collection. The research consists of thirty Baram people selectedthrough quota sampling procedure. The research is based on both primary andsecondary sources of data. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of the obtained data. Thedata are analyzed and compared descriptively with the help of tables, illustrations anddiagrams. The researcher has also presented the rules of clause combining in Baramand compared themwith those to English. The researcher has also listed somesimilarities and differences between English and Baram language. The fourth chapter presents the findingsandrecommendations of the study.
