Passivation in English and Nepali : A Comparative Study

Abstract

Present study is basically a study of Passivization in English and Nepali. The main objectives of the study are to compare the passivization system between the English and Nepali languages and to suggest some pedagogical implications. The sample population consists of 100 Nepalis peaking students of secondary level of Rupandehi district who have Nepali language as a mother tongue. Hundred students were selected by randomsampling procedure. Only one type of research tools i.e. questionnaire wasused to collect the data. The overall study shows that the syntactic position of noun andpronoun as subject and object remain intact in Nepali while changing activesentence into passive sentence.Similarly, there are three types of voice inNepali (kartri bachya,karma bachya and bhawa bachya) where as Englishhas only two types of voice.;This study has been divided into four chapters. Chapter one deals with the introduction. It consists of generalbackground, the linguistic situation of Nepal, the origin and history ofNepali, and introduction of passivization, an importance of CA, anintroduction of transformation and literature review. It also includes the objectives and significance of the study. Chapter two includes methodology adopted during the study with the tools and process of data collection. The study is based on both primary and secondary sources of data. It also includes the limitations of the study as well. Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The collected data are analyzed and interpreted comparatively and descriptively in detail. Chapter four comprises the summary of the findings and recommendations of the study.
