Abstract: This thesis entitled "A Study of Classroom Interaction at Secondary Level" wascarried out to find out some of the basic features of classroom interaction. Themain objective of the study was to find out the existing situation of classroominteraction in secondarylevelEnglish classes. To fulfill the setobjectives of thestudy, both primary and secondary sources of data were used. The researcherobserved 2 classes of 10 secondary English teachersand 300 students from the 10classesand took notes. After analyzing the data it was found out that most of theclassroom interactions were initiated by the teachers and those conversations wereauthoritative and formulaicandbasedonrote learning. This thesis consists of four chapters: The first chapter is introductory in nature.Itintroduces classroom interaction in general. Theclassroom interaction, its aspectsand some interactive activities have been further described in the followingheadings.Some research works have also been critically reviewed in this chapterand objectives of the studyhave been mentioned. The second chapter deals withthe methodology adopted during thestudy. In the preparation of this thesis, bothprimary and secondary sources of datawere used. Sampling procedurewaspurposive.The researcher used classroom observation checklist and kept somediary notesas a tool for data collection. The limitationsof the study are alsomentioned. Similarly, the third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation ofdata collected inthe classroomobservation checklistand diary notes. The lastchapter deals with findings of the studyaccording to the analysis andinterpretation;and some pedagogical suggestions made on the basis ofthefindings. In the final part of the thesis references and appendices have beenincluded systematically.
