Abstract: The title of this research is ‘A Study on the Written Communication Skills’. The main purpose of this research was to find out the secondary level learners proficiency in written English. The researcher collected the data by distributing questionnaires and test items. The data were analyzed in order to find out the learners’ actual writing ability and language teaching strategies applied in the classroom. It was found that none of the students was able to achieve all the goals specified in the curriculum. Out of the total, 30% students were found possessing good writing proficiency, 50% had average writing proficiency and 20% of them were poor in writing. The study is organized in four chapters as follows: Chapter one consists of general background of the thesis ( language, communication, importance of writing and its components, approaches to teaching writing in the ESL classroom, responding to learners mistakes), review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with methodology. It consists of sources of data, population of the study, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Both primary as well as secondary sources were consulted for data collection. Sixty students and 10 teachers from different schools of Bharatpur Municipality were randomly selected as the sample for the collection of required data. Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted with respect to the objectives of English curriculum of secondary level. Chapter four consists of the findings and recommendations of the study. On the basis of the analysis and interpretation some significant findings about learners’ writing ability and classroom strategies applied by the English teachers have been enlisted. Some recommendations have been made on the basis of the findings. This chapter is followed by references and appendices.
