Abstract: The present study entitled "A study on the vocabulary items used in the English Textbook for Grade Five" is an attempt to study the vocabulary items used in the textbook for grade five in terms of parts of speech, frequency, syllable structure, morphological structure and on the basis of suitability and relevancy to the level of students. Basically, all the vocabulary items used in the English textbook for grade five are the secondary source for this study. The researcher used table to deal different parts of speech. The major findings of this study are: nouns occupy the highest number of vocabulary items and articles occupy the lowest number of vocabulary items. Similarly, abbreviated and contracted forms are used 5 and 46 times respectively in the textbook. Among 909 words definite article 'the' has the highest number of frequency. The study is divided into four chapters. Chapter one introduces the study in terms of general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and definition of the specific terms. Chapter two deals with the methodology adopted for the study under which the sources of data, process of data collection and limitations of the study are presented. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of vocabulary items. Mainly descriptive and analytical approaches have been used for the purpose. Chapter four discusses the major findings and recommendations of the study.
