Abstract: This thesis entitled"Negative and Interrogative Transformations inEnglish and Tharu" is an attempt to identify the processes of negative andinterrogative transformations in the Tharu language and to compare andcontrast them with those in English. The researcher utilized both primary andsecondary sources of data. The sample population of the study consists of 60Tharu native speakers who were selected using stratified random samplingprocedure to elicit the required data of negative and interrogativetransformations in Tharu, but for English it was taken from secondary sources.A set of interview schedule was prepared for illiterate and literate informantsbut a set of test questions (questionnaires) were for the educated ones. Aftercollecting the data, it was analyzed, interpreted and then presenteddescriptively and comparatively with the help of tables, diagrams andillustrations. The major findings of the study are: 1. The negative marker in English is 'not' or 'n't' which is placed after anauxiliary verb whereas the negative markers in Tharu are 'nat/mat' and'naik h e' which are added immediately before the main verb. 2. The Tharu negative markers 'nat/mat' occurs only in imperativesentences, but 'naikhe' occurs in either tenses. 3. In yes/no question, an auxiliary verb occurs at the beginning of thesentence in English whereas the yes/no question marker 'ka:' isintroduced and placed at the end of the sentences inTharu. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with introduction. It consists of general background, review of the related literatures, objectives ofthe study, significance of the study and definition of the specific terms. Chapter two deals with methodology. It encompasses sources of data, sample population and sampling procedure, research tools, processes of datacollection and limitations of the study. Chapter three deals with analysis and interpretation of the data. It comprises rules of negative and interrogative transformations in English and Tharu, and the processes of negative and interrogative transformations between Tharu and English. Chapter four encompasses findings, recommendations and pedagogical implications.
