Abstract: This research work is basically a study of English Code Mixing in theNepali Essays. The objectives of the study were to find out mixed codes in theNepali essays, to analyze language of code mixing in the Nepali essays in termsof word classes, phrases, sentence types, morphemic structures, syllabicity andcontext. To fulfill these objectives the researcher used non-random judgmentalsampling procedure to collect the data. Only secondary sources of data wereconsulted; twelve Nepali essays were purposively selected for the study. The overall study comes to the end finding that there is a large amount ofEnglish code mixing in the Nepali essays. Word level mixing has the highestmixing of other levels. Noun phrases have also been mixed highly. The mixing ofEnglish sentences and abbreviations are significantly high. Simple sentences havehigher occurrences than compound and complex sentences. Monomorphemicwords are used highly. Likewise, in terms of syllabicity, disyllabic words havethe highest position. While describing the context, (in which context to Englishwords takeplace in Nepali essays) words that have Nepali equivalence are higheroccurrences than without having Nepali equivalent terms. It contains mainly four chapters. Chapter one deals with introductory parts,which mainly consists of general background, description and reason of codeswitching and mixing, introduction to literature, historical background of Nepaliessays etc. It also includes the review of various related research works. Similarly, chapter two introduces the methodology for the study. At first,the researcher prepared the checklist and collected all English words mixed in theNepali essays. It also introduces the sources of data for the study, tools andprocess of data collection and the limitations of the study. Chapter three dealswith the analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The data are analyzedand interpreted using the statistical tools like table, pie chart etc. And finally, chapter four encompasses with the summary of the findings, recommendations and pedagogical implications of the study.
