Conditional Sentences in English and Maithili

Abstract

This thesis entitled 'Conditional Sentences in English and Maithili: A Comparative Study' is an attempt to identify the process of conditional sentences in English and Maithili. There searcher utilized both primary and secondary sources of data.The sample population of the study consisted of 60Maithili native speakers who were selected using stratified random sample procedure and English data has been taken from the secondary sources of data. The major findings of the study were: if the conditional sentence marker ‘if clause’ is in the present tense the main clause should be in the present tense or the future tense in both the English Maithili languages. ‘If clause’ occurs at the beginning of the sentence in English whereas the 'agar' is introduced and placed at the beginning of the sentence in Maithili. This thesis includes four chapters. Chapter one deals with introduction. It consists of general background, review of related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study,and definitions of the specific terms. Chapter two deals with methodology. It encompasses sources of data, sample population and sampling procedure, process of data collection and limitations of the study.Chapter three deals with analysis and interpretation of the data. It comprises rules of conditional sentences in English and Maithili. Chapter four encompasses findings, recommendation sand pedagogical implications.
