Title: The Mixing of English Code in Nepali public Speaking

Abstract: The present research work is an effort to find out the state of English code mixing in Nepali public speaking. In order to carry out this study the researcher collected data from Nepali public speakers of different backgrounds at different time and occasions in the Kathmandu valley. The total sample population of the study consists of 50 Nepali public speakers who were selected by using random sampling procedure. The main tool that the researcher made use of was recorder-player,which contained the speech of 50 different Nepali public speakers (5-8 minutes of each). Another tool used by the researcher was observation schedules: the observation schedule-1 subsumed the type of the speakers, topic, context, words mixed by them, parts of speech of the words mixed, frequency of them, etc., and the observation schedule-2 entailed the mixed words along with the context except in the recorded speech on the respective topic. On the basis of the collected data, the state of English code mixing in Nepali public speaking was determined using simple statistical tools such as frequency and percentage. The findings of the study show that the common words, which are in use in Nepali language are frequently mixed also in public speaking. Mostly, noun sand non-derivative word sare mixed in Nepali public speaking. The study shows mixing of the English code depends on the topic, context and type of the speakers as has been found in the study. English code mixing in public speaking is highly an automatic habit of the speakers, though there are some reasons for code mixing such as choice of the topic, meaning clarification, etc. The study consists of four chapters altogether. Chapter one deals with general background of the study, review of the related literature, objectives of the study,and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with methodology with entails sources of data, sampling population and procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three entails analysis and interpretation of the data. The data have been analyzed and interpreted under different headings using simple statistical tools and researcher's intuition. Chapter four consists of findings and recommendations made in the light of the analysis, interpretations and findings.
