Abstract: The title of this thesis is"English or Maithili: Effective medium of Instruction in Teaching English."The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of media of instruction in teaching English at grade five. The sample population of this study was thirty students of grade five studying at K.A. Secondary School, Rajbiraj. To determine the proficiency at the entry point, a written pre-test was taken using researcher designed test items. Thes tudents were ranked from first to the last on the basis of the results of the pre-test. They were then divided in to two groups according to odd-even ranking of the individual score. After group division, one group (Group 'A') was taught through English medium and another group (Group 'B') was taught through Maithili medium. Each group was taught9unitsof the book. Then a post-test was taken. The test items for the post-test were exactly the same as used in the pre-test. Thereafter the results of two tests were compared to determine the effectiveness of the two media for teaching English at grade five.As a whole, it is found that Maithili medium is more effective than English medium while teaching English at grade five. This study is divided into four main chapters. The first chapterdeals with introduction of the study. It includes general background,linguistic scenario of Nepal, an introduction of the Maithili language, the English language and its significance, a brief account of ELT in Nepal,language: as a medium of instruction, literature review, objectives of the study and significance of the study. viii The second chapter deals with the methodology used for the study described in terms of sources of data collection, sampling procedure,tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The data have been analyzed and interpreted on the basis of difference between the average scores of each group in the pre-test and post-test. The results of the average scoring has also been converted in to percentage and the increment has been compared. The data were tabulated into two main headings:The descriptive data and analysis of affectiveness. The fourth chapter deals with the findings and recommendations of the study. Lastly, the references and appendices are included as the concluding part of the thesis.
