Abstract: This research study entitled Free Writing Proficiency of Grade Eight Students:A Comparative Study sought to explore free writing proficiency of grade eight students from institutional and public schools of Morang District. In order to find out the students ’free writing ability a set of test items consisting different free writing questions were asked to the students of institutional and community schools.This is the survey research study.To address the objectives of the study,40 students were selected from two(one institutional and one community)schools as a sample using non-random sampling procedure.This study examined students’ free writing ability in terms of the mechanics,grammar,cohesion,coherence,clarity,economy and completeness in holistic way.This research was carried out by using both primary and secondary sources of data and a set of test items was used as a tool for data collection.The study reveals that free writing proficiency of the students was quite satisfactory.The above results shows that institutional school students were found more proficient in comparison to community school students in essay writing. This thesis comprises five chapters.The first one presents the general background of the study,statement of the problem,objectives of the study,significance of the study,delimitation s of the study and operational definition of the key terms. Chapter two consists the review of related theoretical literature,review of empirical literature,implications of the study and conceptual framework.Chapter three includes design and method of the study,population,Sample and sampling strategy,research tools, sources of data,data collection procedure,data analysis procedures.Chapter four deals with analysis of data and interpretation of result and summary and discussion of findings.Similarly last chapter deals with findings, conclusions and recommendations.References and the appendices are presented in the final part of this study.
