Abstract: The present study entitled, ‘Strategies Adopted in Teaching Short Stories atGrade Eleven’was carried out to explore the strategies adopted by teachers inteaching short stories at grade eleven. My interest in strategies in teaching shortstories arose from my own teaching experience and my struggles to understand theimportance of using various strategies while teaching stories in the classrooms.I usedsurvey research design to accomplish this study. In order to carry out this study, Icollected the data from forty teachers teaching English at grade XI in Lalitpur districtthrough purposive sampling procedure. The questionnaireand observation checklistwere used as the main tools for data collection. The findings of the study showed thatvarious activities at pre-reading stage were practiced well, however, group discussionabout title of the story wasnot practiced in any of the class. Regarding while readingactivities, summarization of the story was practiced in all the classes whereas, butnone of the classes were provided title for each paragraph and arranging jumbledsentence. Similarly, regarding post reading activities, interpretation of the story waspracticed in majority of the classeswhile it was found in observation that50 percentof the teachers wrote review of the story to the students. This thesis hasbeen divided into five chapters. The first chapter deals withbackground of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, researchquestions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operationaldefinitions of the key terms. The second chapter incorporates the review of relatedliterature, implication of the review of the study and conceptual framework. The thirdchapter deals with the methods and procedure of this study.
