Abstract
Withthepopularityofsmartphones,alotofproblemarebeingsolvedthroughtheuseof
mobileapplications.Oneoftheproblemisroadaccidentswhichoccursduetomainlythe
poorconditionofroad.Teauthoritiesneedtokeeptherecordabouttheconditionofthe
roadstobeabletomaintaintheroadsingoodcondition.Mobilephonewithembedded
powerfulsensorssuchasaccelerometers,gyroscopesetcmakeitverypowerfulsothis
thesistriestoexploitthesesensorstodevelopasystemcapableofautomaticallydetecting
thepotholesinrealtime.AlgorithmslikeZ-THRESH,Z-DIFF,STDEV(Z)andZ-ZEROare
widelyusedtodetectpotholesinrealtimebuttheyhaveveryhighfalsepositiveresult
whenusedindividuallywiththresholdvalueskeptconstant.Inthisthesis,thethreshold
valuesaremadedynamicandittakesthevalueasafunctionofspeed.Also,thepot-
holesaredetectedbasedonresultofallfouralgorithms.Teusersonlyneedtoenable
theapplicationwhiledrivingandallthedataaresenttotheserverandthepotholesare
mappedinwebintherealtime.Tesystemdevelopedisevaluatedusingdataobtained
fromcrawdad.orgdatasetandalsoverifedonthedatasetgeneratedthroughandroidap-
plicationwhichshowbeterresultthanpreviouswork.
Description
With the popularity of smartphones ,a lot of problem are being solved through the use
mobile applications. One of the problem is road accidents which occurs due to mainly the
poor condition of road.
