This study explores the utility of an area frame developed using remote sensing data in the provinces of Savannakhet (Lao People’s Democratic Republic), Ang Thong (Thailand), and Thai Binh (Viet Nam). It seeks to help address issues related to traditional sampling strategies for paddy rice statistics that rely on outdated list frames, incomplete holding information, or administrative data that may be prone to measurement error. Direct estimates of total paddy rice area and production involving the measurement of plot sizes using Global Positioning System instruments together with a digitally traced map of plot boundaries identified by farmers are also presented in this study, and compared to ratio estimates using independent mesh-level measures.
