This paper examines the need to reduce inequalities in income, wealth, and educational opportunities as the People’s Republic of China shifts to high-quality development. Since implementing reforms and opening up in 1978, the People’s Republic of China has experienced strong, sustained economic growth that has enabled the country to reduce poverty on an unprecedented scale. But this success has brought challenges, particularly high levels of inequalities between the rural and urban areas. The paper provides policy recommendations to promote the achievement of objectives to reduce inequalities, which will be necessary for maintaining social cohesion and ensure economic security and mobility.
