To fulfill the objectives of the study, the researcher collected both primary and secondary sources of data. He selected 100 Danuwar native speaker students from Shree Azad Higher Secondary School, Devbhoomi Baluwa- 5, Kavre as the primary sources of data. He used probability sampling: simple random sampling procedure to select the informants. For the primary sources of data, he prepared a set of questionnaire, administered and requested the informants to fill up. After that, he analyzed, interpreted and presented the outcomes descriptively and comparatively with the help of suitable tables and illustrations. The researcher had studied two languages and has found some similarities and differences between the two languages in different levels. Word level negation of English can be derived by derivational prefixes (in-, im-, un-, dis-, etc.), suffixes (-less, -free, etc.) and antonyms (rich-poor) whereas in Danuwar language 'nəi-' 'boi-', '-bəiken' and lexical words (kəkhnukanhi, əsəmbhwə, etc) are used. Likewise the phrasal level negation of English can be achieved by adding 'no' to 'NP' negative and 'not' before infinitive verbs whereas in Danuwar language 'nəi-', 'boi-', '-bəiken', '-leken' are attached to main verbs and auxiliary verbs. In the same way sentence level negation of English can be gained by adding 'not' or 'n't' after auxiliary verbs whereas in Danuwar language 'nəi-, 'boi-', 'zun-', '-boike', '-bəiken', '-leken' and 'nə…nə' are used. Another 'Not' or 'n't' negative marker is used after the auxiliary verbs in assertive sentence of English language but in Danuwar language 'nəi-, 'boi-', 'zun-', are placed before the main verbs and '-boike'/'bəike', and '-leken' are placed at the end of the sentences. 'Do-support' or 'Operator-addition' need to be added in the absence of auxiliary verbs for making the sentence negative in English whereas there is not need of such a rule in Danuwar language. 'No' negative marker can be the initiator of phrasal level utterance in English but not any negative markers can do the same in Danuwar language. Negative lexical words are found in both of the languages. 'Not' the negative marker of English is used in contracted form but this technique is not found in Danuwar language. Next there is 'S-V agreement' in English negation system but it is not the same in the Danuwar language. The thesis comprises of four chapters. The first chapter deals with 'introduction'. It consists of general background, review of the related literatures, objectives of the study, significance of it and definition of the specific terms. The second chapter deals with 'methodology'. It includes sources of data, population of the study, sample population, and sampling procedures, research tools, processes of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with 'analysis and interpretation'. It encompasses holistic analysis of negation systems of the Danuwar language, holistic comparison of negation systems of Danuwar and English and similarities and differences of negation systems between them. The fourth chapter deals with 'findings and recommendations' which suggests for the further steps in the related field.Item Phatic Communion in English and Tamang(Faculty of Education, 2010) Tamang, SaritaThis research entitled ‘Phatic Communion in English and Tamang’ was carried out to find out the initiation process of English and Tamang native speakers as phatic communion. It was also carried out to find out similarities and differences of the processes of phatic communion between English and Tamang native speakers in gender. For this research a VDC of Kavre district was selected and two government-aided schools of Panauti Municipality were selected as study area. Altogether 40 informants of the Tamang language were selected, among them there were 20 male and 20 female. Similarly, there were 20 native speakers of the English language as well. There were two sets of questionnaire for both the natives of English and Tamang languages. The collected data were analyzed on the basis of two criteria; forms of sentences and functions of language. On the basis of the main findings both the natives used interrogative form of sentences and regarding language functions, they used asking about activities function more than others for phatic communion while responding to the given situations. The study has been presented in four chapters. The first chapter consists of general background, relationship between language and society, functions of language, phatic communion, linguistic scenario of Nepal, an introduction to the Tamang Language, contrastive analysis and its importance, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, and the significance of the study. The second chapter describes methodology applied to carry out the study which includes sources of data; primary and secondary, research tools, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter consists of analysis and interpretation of data which also consists of mainly two parts. The first parts dealt with an analysis of exponents used by native speakers of English and Tamang languages on the basis of forms of sentences and functions of language and the second part dealt with the comparison of form and functions of language. The findings are derived from the analysis and interpretation in the fourth chapter. In the final section of study, the references and appendices are included.Item Proficiency of Grade Nine Students in English Word Derivation(Faculty of Education, 2010) Timalsina, MadhavThis research entitled "Proficiency of Grade Nine Students in English Word Derivation" is an attempt to find out the proficiency of the students of grade nine in English word derivation by using the class changing derivational suffixes and compare their proficiency in terms of schools, government-aided vs. private schools, gender and four major word classes : noun, verb, adjective and adverb. Three government-aided and three private boarding schools were selected through purposive random sampling procedure and twenty students (10 boys and 10 girls) from each of the selected schools were chosen by using stratified random sampling procedure for the sake of data collection. The tool for the data collection consisted of test items. The proficiency in derivation of English words was analysed and interpreted by using tables and statistical tools: percentage and average. The total proficiency of the students (91.34% of the full mark) was found very good. The students of Saraswoti Kunj Boarding School performed the best with 98.21% and the students of Shikshya Sadan Higher Secondary School performed the lowest with 76.5%. The proficiency of private school students was better than that of government-aided school students by 11.16% and the girls were 1.16% more proficient than the boys. Chapter three presents the analysis and interpretation of the data under different headings using the statistical tools : tables, average and percentage. Chapter four presents findings of the study and recommendations from the perspective of pedagogical implications as well as further research.
