Item Current Status and Problems of Implementing Listening Practices at Secondary Level(2017) Chaudhary, Santosh KumarThis is a research entitled “Current Status and Problems of Implementing Listening Practices at Secondary Level”. The major objectives of the study were to find out the current status of listening practices and to identify the problems faced by the teachers while teaching listening. The sample of forty teachers was selected from secondary level English teachers of community schools of Dhanusha district following non-random sampling procedure. Questionnaire was exploited as major tool for primary data collection. The collected data were analysed descriptively using simple statistical tools and tables. The study revealed that the status of teaching listening is good but testing practice is not effective. Moreover, teaching listening is not emancipated from problems. The inadequate listening materials and resources were the major problems for teaching and testing listening. In most of the schools, listening cassettes and sound devices were not available. Furthermore, the teaching listening was greatly affected by load-shedding. The majority of the teachers, to overcome the problems, were found using live materials to teach listening. They exclusively depended on teacher’s guides to practice this skill inside the classrooms. The students had very less opportunity to listening to the tape in listening lessons. This study comprises of five chapters. Chapter one consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definitions of the key terms. Chapter two incorporates review of related theoretical literature, review of related empirical literature, implications of the review for the study, and conceptual framework. Chapter three includes design and method of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, research tools, sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. Chapter four encompasses analysis of data and interpretation of results. This research focuses on tense system of English and Tharu language in Jhapa District. It attempts to show time reference which is manifested in English and Tharu tense aspect. In this way a comparative study on tense aspects in both these languages show how tense aspects are different. It is due to difference in language. It also tries to find out whether both tense aspects adopt equal division or not. There is similar tense system both in English and Tharu language. Another important aspect is to show how comfortable a Tharu language speaker feels to get used to English tense system; similarly how much familiar an English speaker finds to use Tharu language, especially in-terms of tense system.Item Thanking and Congratulating in English and Tharu(Department of English Education, 2014) Chaudhary, Santosh KumarThis study entitled‘Thanking and Congratulating in English and Tharu’aimed to identify and compare the exponents of expressing thanks and congratulations in English and Tharu. For this study, the researcher took the sample consisting of 60 native speakers using purposive non-random judgemental sampling procedure from the Saptari district. The study was basedon both primary and secondary data. The responses from the native Tharu speakers obtained through questionnaire/interview schedule served as primary data. However the secondary sources were used for collecting data fo rthanking and congratulating in English. The responses given by sample were coded for analysis and interpretation. On the basis of analysis and interpretation of thedata, researcher came to the conclusion that Tharu speakers used moreinformal exponents of thanking and congratulating than those of English speakers. Tharu speakers used less number of formal congratulating exponents to their teachers than those of English speakers. This study is divided into four chapters. Chapter one is an introduction part. It includes general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study.Similarly, chapter two deals with the methodology applied to carry out the research under which sources of data,sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study are presented.Likewise, chapter three present the analysis and interpretation of the data whereas chapter four deals with the research findings and recommendations based on the analysis and interpretation of the data. This chapter is followed by reference and appendix.
