Abstract
This is a research entitled “Current Status and Problems of Implementing Listening Practices at Secondary Level”. The major objectives of the study were to find out the current status of listening practices and to identify the problems faced by the teachers while teaching listening. The sample of forty teachers was selected from secondary level English teachers of community schools of Dhanusha district following non-random sampling procedure. Questionnaire was exploited as major tool for primary data collection. The collected data were analysed descriptively using simple statistical tools and tables. The study revealed that the status of teaching listening is good but testing practice is not effective. Moreover, teaching listening is not emancipated from problems. The inadequate listening materials and resources were the major problems for teaching and testing listening. In most of the schools, listening cassettes and sound devices were not available. Furthermore, the teaching listening was greatly affected by load-shedding. The majority of the teachers, to overcome the problems, were found using live materials to teach listening. They exclusively depended on teacher’s guides to practice this skill inside the classrooms. The students had very less opportunity to listening to the tape in listening lessons. This study comprises of five chapters. Chapter one consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definitions of the key terms. Chapter two incorporates review of related theoretical literature, review of related empirical literature, implications of the review for the study, and conceptual framework. Chapter three includes design and method of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, research tools, sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. Chapter four encompasses analysis of data and interpretation of results. Chapter five incorporates findings, conclusion, and recommendations.
