Item A study on grade twelve students' proficiency on communicative functions in English(2015) Thapa, Deepak; Padam Lal BharatiABSTRACT This research is an effort to find out the students' proficiency in using the appropriate expressions of language to serve various communicative functions in the given situations. The communicative functions against which the students' proficiency tested were selected from those included in the textbook at Grade 11 of HSEB namely 'Meanings into Words, Intermediate Student's Book ' on the basis of most common functions that are likely to occur in everyday communicative life in general. So, primarily this research is to see how far the students who completed their Grade 11 in the academic year 2070/71 the textbook mentioned which primarily deal with reading and writing skills in English could show the proficiency in using those communicative functions in the extended settings of daily communication. In order to carry out this study the researcher collected data from the Grade 12 (academic year 2071/72) students studying in the campuses/schools of Khairahani Municipality, Chitwan District. The total sample population of the study comprised 120 students and they were selected by using stratified random sampling procedure. The tools that the researcher made use of were two types of test items carrying 25 full marks each: receptive in which students were to recognize the expressions appropriate to serve various communicative functions in the given situations and productive in which students had to produce the appropriate expressions on their own to fulfill various communicative functions in the given situations. While coding students' responses, each appropriate receptive answer was assigned 1 score and 2 score for the correct productive response. The scores obtained from the students were tabulated on the basis of variables specified. On the basis of the collected data the students' proficiency in using appropriate expressions of language to serve those communicative functions was determined by using simple statistical tools such as average and percentage. The findings of the study showed that the average communicative proficiency of the students as a whole was 46.06 percent. The study consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with general background of the study, statement of the problem, research questions, and objectives of the study, significance of the study and delimitations of the study. Chapter two deals with the review of the theoretical literature, review of empirical literature, implication of the review for the study and conceptual framework. Chapter three entails design of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, field of the study, tools for data collection, and process of data collection. Chapter four contains analysis and interpretation of the data. The data have been analyzed under content- oriented variables and informant -oriented variables. Major findings are listed. Chapter five consists of conclusions and recommendations made on the basis of the findings.Item Celebration of Materiality in Whitman’s “Song of Myself”(Department of English, 2009) Thapa, DeepakNot availableItem Games For learning Mathematics at Basic level(Department of Mathematics Education, 2021) Thapa, DeepakThis is a survey study entitle “Games for Learning Mathematics at Basic Level”. The Primary focus of the present study was an evaluation of the effectiveness of games when used in basic level mathematics students. The sample of study included 40 students of grade four of government school: Shree Dharmodaya MadhyamicVidhyalaya, Airawati Gaupalika, Pyuthan district. In this particular research, researcher adopted experimental design that included both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The quantitative data obtained from achievement test and standard deviation, correlation and co-efficient of regression were used for analysis of quantitative data.Qualitative data obtained from observation and interview with both teacher and students who experienced the use of mathematics games supported the quantitative findings concerning the effectiveness of games in mathematics classes. The results from achievement test papers suggest that there were statistically significant pre–post differences for achievement of students. In-depth information for qualitative data were provided from observations and interviews. The data were analyzed to shed light on students’ interactions during the games and to triangulate and to clarify and explain students’ responses to the learning environment and attitude questionnaires. Analysis of the interviews suggested that the students generally enjoyed mathematics more when games were included in their lessons, and that the use of mathematics games had improved their feelings positively about how well they were performing in mathematics. During the study, teachers had seen often reluctant to use games in their mathematics classrooms; my study is significant as the results have the potential to encourage mathematics teachers to incorporate the use of games in their classrooms as a viable alternative pedagogical approach.Item Gothic Subversion of Optimistic Psychology: Reading Charles Brockden Brown’s Wieland(Department of English, 2009) Thapa, DeepakTo read Charles Brockden Brown’s novelWielandis to explore the American psyche of Post-Revolutionary era and to decode the negative malfunctioning created as the result of individual’s expectations of using the freedom in its optimum level. Presenting Gothic elements Brown criticizes the excessive use of freedom and expresses his desire of inviting civil authority. In the novel Wieland characters like, Wieland, Carwin, Maxwell etc. are representing the aforementioned features. The maximum use of their freedom has created problem like murder, seduction. So the novel subverts such issues of the-then society and demands for the restoration of the moral society.Item SMART EV CHARGER WITH REACTIVE POWER COMPENSATION(I.O.E. Pulchowk Campus, 2023-06) Ghimire, Ankit; Dhungel, Ashish; Thapa, Deepak; Bhandari, NirajanThe voltage drop is a serious issue that the grid is facing at present due to the penetration of a large number of EVs. For this at present STATCOMs and Capacitor banks are used, however STATCOMs are expensive and Capacitor Banks have less reliability. In this situation we came up with an idea to embed the functions of such compensating devices into the charger itself in order to increase the system reliability and reduce the use of such expensive devices. This paper illustrates the overall procedure of the prototype design of the system and an EV charger that regulates the voltage at the user end. As our final year project, we sought to develop a smart EV charger that compensates for the reactive power in the grid and maintains the voltage at the user end while charging the vehicle battery simultaneously. The project was carried out first in simulation (MATLAB) and then proceeded with hardware implementation right from the scratch. At first, we simulated the design in a Three phase system and observed the result in MATLAB Simulink. The charger works as a boost rectifier thus we were able to charge a 60 KW charger at unity power factor. While charging, the node voltage was dropped significantly low below the standard limit. Thus, in order to regulate the voltage at the node of connection. We supplied the reactive power to the grid through the charger.
