Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research is an effort to find out the students' proficiency in using the appropriate expressions of language to serve various communicative functions in the given situations. The communicative functions against which the students' proficiency tested were selected from those included in the textbook at Grade 11 of HSEB namely 'Meanings into Words, Intermediate Student's Book ' on the basis of most common functions that are likely to occur in everyday communicative life in general. So, primarily this research is to see how far the students who completed their Grade 11 in the academic year 2070/71 the textbook mentioned which primarily deal with reading and writing skills in English could show the proficiency in using those communicative functions in the extended settings of daily communication. In order to carry out this study the researcher collected data from the Grade 12 (academic year 2071/72) students studying in the campuses/schools of Khairahani Municipality, Chitwan District. The total sample population of the study comprised 120 students and they were selected by using stratified random sampling procedure. The tools that the researcher made use of were two types of test items carrying 25 full marks each: receptive in which students were to recognize the expressions appropriate to serve various communicative functions in the given situations and productive in which students had to produce the appropriate expressions on their own to fulfill various communicative functions in the given situations. While coding students' responses, each appropriate receptive answer was assigned 1 score and 2 score for the correct productive response. The scores obtained from the students were tabulated on the basis of variables specified. On the basis of the collected data the students' proficiency in using appropriate expressions of language to serve those communicative functions was determined by using simple statistical tools such as average and percentage. The findings of the study showed that the average communicative proficiency of the students as a whole was 46.06 percent.
The study consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with general background of the study, statement of the problem, research questions, and objectives of the study, significance of the study and delimitations of the study. Chapter two deals with the review of the theoretical literature, review of empirical literature, implication of the review for the study and conceptual framework. Chapter three entails design of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, field of the study, tools for data collection, and process of data collection. Chapter four contains analysis and interpretation of the data. The data have been analyzed under content- oriented variables and informant -oriented variables. Major findings are listed. Chapter five consists of conclusions and recommendations made on the basis of the findings.
