Item Exploring Ways for Teaching Grammar Lessons at Secondary Level(Department of English Education, 2017) Subedi, PrakashTeaching grammar is one of the aspects of language teaching. Different methods such as teaching from rules, teaching from examples, teaching through texts have been employed to teach grammar since the past. Thus, this present study entitled “Exploring Ways for Teaching Grammar lessons at Secondary Level”aimed at exploring the practice ways for grammar teaching at secondary level in terms of; teaching prepositions, articles, tense, tags,causative verbs and subject verb agreement. This research was done to explore the practice ways for each of these grammatical lessons. Both the primary and secondary sources of data were used to carry out this research. Separate tools i.e questionnaire and classroom observation checklists were used to elicit the data. The result shows that most of the teachers use inductive ways to teach grammar lessons focusing on learner-centered techniques. The findings indicated that the teachers can use and select methods on the basis of level of the learners and context and nature of the text. This study comprises altogether five chapters. The first chapter is introductory part which includes background of the study, statement of the problems,objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study,delimitations of the study and operational definition of the key terms.Similarly, second chapter includes the review of theoretical and empirical literature and its implications as well as the conceptual framework. In the same way, third chapter deals with the methods and procedures of the study under which design of the study, population sample and sampling strategy,research tools, data collection procedures, data analysis and interpretation procedures as well as ethical considerations are mentioned. Likewise, chapter four comprises analysis and interpretation of results.Chapter five includes summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations. Finally, the references and appendices are included.Item A Study on Code-Mixing in the Nepali Language in Super Markets(Department of English Education, 2006) Lamichhane, ArjunThis dissertation is basically a study of English code mixing inbusinesstransactions. The main objectives of the study are to find out themixed English wordsin Nepali discoursesin supermarketsandto find outthe age-wise and sex-wise trend of mixing English words insupermarkets. The sample population consists of those participantsinvolved in 100 different speech events in supermarkets. Altogether, theresearcher collected data from ten different business complexes. Theoverall study comes to an end that code mixing is an established featurein supermarkets. Word level mixing has been seen as the highestfrequency in all supermarkets. The researcher focuses on the age-wiseand sex-wise mixingof English words in theNepali conversations. Noresearch yet has been carried out in this area to see the features ofEnglish/Nepali code mixing. This thesis contains altogether four chapters. Chapter Onedealswith the introduction. It consists of general background, code switchingand code mixing, terminological issues, types of code switching,difference between code switching and code mixing, reasons for codemixing and code switching, review of related literature, objectives of thestudy, significance of the study and definition of specific terms. ChapterTwodeals with methodology. It encompassessources ofdata, population of the study, sample population, tools for data collection,process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter Three consists of analysis and interpretation of therequired data. It consists of four parts. Part one deals with the descriptionof English and Nepali words; part two deals with the analysis andinterpretation of the most frequently mixedwords,and the third part deals viii with the analysis and interpretation of the age-wise trends of mixingEnglish words and the last part deals with the sex-wise trends of mixingEnglish words. The data are analyzed on the basis of percentageandtheyare presented on the table. Chapter Four presents the summary of findings, pedagogicalimplications and recommendations. The study reveals that the greatest andtheleast number of words ofboth the languages occurred according to the situation, mode of thespeaker, their performance level, age and sex. Mostly the researcherfound the word level switching, i.e. code mixing rather than sentencelevel switching,i.e. code switching in supermarkets.Item Techniques of Teaching Speaking Adopted in Language Institutes(Department of English Education, 2009) Basnet, Lila DhoajThe present study entitled “Techniques of Teaching Speaking Adopted in Language Institutes” aims to find out the techniques used in teaching speaking by the instructors in different language institutes. This research study was done using both primary and secondary sources of data. For primary data, I observed the classes of English language teachers with a pre- prepared checklist and distributed a set of questionnaire to those teachers as well. After the study and analysis it is found that discussion, role play, pair work and dialogue were commonly used techniques of teaching speaking. The study is presented in four major chapters. The first chapter of the study deals with the general background, the English language and overall view, the English language and its importance in Nepal , language teaching, language skill , teaching of speaking, techniques of teaching speaking and techniques of teaching speaking in language institutes. The second chapter deals with the methodology used in the study: the sources of data, sample population, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, data collection procedures, etc. The third chapter is the main part of the study which includes analysis and interpretation of the data.
