Item Code Mixing in Poetry: A Case of Modern Nepali Poems(Department of English Education, 2008) Gautam, Gokarna PrasadThis research is basically a study of English code mixing in modern Nepali poems. Itaims at analyzing the English expressions mixed in the poems composed during themodern era of Nepali literature. The primary sources of data were the composers andreaders of modern Nepali poems. Similarly, the secondary sources of data were thepoems composed during the modern age. The required data were gathered by employingjudgmental non-random sampling. That is to say, only thirty poems were selected out ofthe poems composed from the time of Lekh Nath Poudel to the date. Likewise, 15composers and 15 readers of the modern Nepali poetry were chosen to obtain theirattitude towards English code mixing. The data was analyzed using simple statisticaltools like frequency and percentage. The findings of the study show that out of differentEnglish expressions, words are mixed maximally in modern Nepali poetry. Within wordsalso, nouns are mixed more than other word classes (verbs, adjectives, adverbs). It isfound that modern poems contain different English expressions due to globalization ofEnglish and rapid development of modern science and technology. Similarly, writers'English background, lacks of actual Nepali equivalent terms, etc. are the major reasonsfor English code mixing in modern Nepali poetry. The first chapter deals with general background, review of the related literature, objectiveof the study and so on. Similarly, the second chapter deals with the methodology adoptedand the third chapter consists ofthe analysis and interpretation of the collected data.Finally, the fourth chapter deals with the findings and recommendations.Item Code Mixing in the Nepali Essays(Department of English Education, 2008) Bhandari, BhagwatiThis research work is basically a study of English Code Mixing in theNepali Essays. The objectives of the study were to find out mixed codes in theNepali essays, to analyze language of code mixing in the Nepali essays in termsof word classes, phrases, sentence types, morphemic structures, syllabicity andcontext. To fulfill these objectives the researcher used non-random judgmentalsampling procedure to collect the data. Only secondary sources of data wereconsulted; twelve Nepali essays were purposively selected for the study. The overall study comes to the end finding that there is a large amount ofEnglish code mixing in the Nepali essays. Word level mixing has the highestmixing of other levels. Noun phrases have also been mixed highly. The mixing ofEnglish sentences and abbreviations are significantly high. Simple sentences havehigher occurrences than compound and complex sentences. Monomorphemicwords are used highly. Likewise, in terms of syllabicity, disyllabic words havethe highest position. While describing the context, (in which context to Englishwords takeplace in Nepali essays) words that have Nepali equivalence are higheroccurrences than without having Nepali equivalent terms. It contains mainly four chapters. Chapter one deals with introductory parts,which mainly consists of general background, description and reason of codeswitching and mixing, introduction to literature, historical background of Nepaliessays etc. It also includes the review of various related research works. Similarly, chapter two introduces the methodology for the study. At first,the researcher prepared the checklist and collected all English words mixed in theNepali essays. It also introduces the sources of data for the study, tools andprocess of data collection and the limitations of the study. Chapter three dealswith the analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The data are analyzedand interpreted using the statistical tools like table, pie chart etc. And finally, chapter four encompasses with the summary of the findings, recommendations and pedagogical implications of the study.Item Code-Mixing in Nepali Film Songs(Department of English Education, 2009) Adhikari, GokulThe research aims to analyze the use of the English language in Nepali Film Songs. It focuses on major word class, sentence types, language functions and context in which code mixing takes place. In order to carryout this work, there searcher obtained songs from Kantipur F.M.,Nepal F.M. and different music companies. Twenty five Nepali film songs released for public since 2042 B.S.to 2065 B.S were chosen for the study. The researcher used judgmental/purposive non-random sampling procedure to collect the songs. The researcher made use of check lists and CD player as research tools. He listened to the sampled songs and jotted down the instances of code mixing in check lists. For confirmation, he listened to the sampled songs time and again. He jotted down the essential information in his note book too. The findings of this work show that the mixing of English code in Nepali film songs is a natural phenomenon.Maximum nouns and verbs are mixed in Nepali film songs followed by adverbs and adjectives. The words that are used in sampled Nepali film songs are simple and commonly used in day-to-day communication. Likewise, simple sentences are maximally used than compound and complex sentences in Nepali film songs. The functions like: warning, ordering, requesting, scolding, etc. are used maximally than other functions. Regarding the contexts, English codemixing takes place while talking about education, while expressing love, at thetime of meeting, introducing and apologizing etc. This research work has four chapters. Chapter one deals with the generalbackground, review of related literature, objectives of the study, the significance of the study and the definition of specific terms. Chapter two presents the methodology, sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure and tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of data. The data was analyzed and interpreted using simple statistical tools like frequency and percentage. Chapter four consists of the findings and recommendation of the research.Item A Study on Code Mixing in 'Sukarat Ka Paila'(Department of English Education, 2010) Puri, RajuThis research study entitled "A Study on Code –mixing in Sukarat Ka Paila" aims at identifying the mixed English expressions in the novel, the reasons of such mixing and predominantly it aims at exploring the opinions of literary figures and author towards mixing English code in Nepali expressions. The researcher collected data from primary and secondary sources. For primary sources the researcher selected twenty literary figures from Chitwan and Nawalparasi districts by using purposive sampling. Moreover, the researcher collected information from the author of the very novel 'Sukarat Ka Paila'. The researcher employed the diary, unstructured interview schedule and questionnaire as the research tools. This research study concludes with the findings that English code mixing in the Nepali language is common phenomenon. It is the cause of different factors like author's acquaintance in the English language, due to linguistic imperialism, due to advancement and rapid expansion of the English language, etc. among the mixed English expressions, word level expressions were high. Within word level also nouns were more in comparison to others. Thus, code-mixing is natural and common phenomena that every Nepali native speaker believes and accepts. This research work entails four chapters. The first chapter deals with introduction which, in turn, consists of general background, review of related literature, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with methodology.It incorporates sources of data both primary and secondary, tools for data collection, data collection procedure and limitations of the study. The third chapter consists of analysis and interpretation of the data to identify the reasons and perceived attitudes of the literary figures and author towards English code-mixing in Nepali expressions. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted separately by giving main headings and sub-headings. Such as interpretation of information collected from three tools. Finally, it also provides some recommendations on the basis of findings. The final section of the study incorporates the references and appendices.
