Item An Analysis of Grade Nine English Textbook of Janak(Faculty of Education, 2019) Thapaliya, KanchanThis thesis is about ‘An Analysis of Grade Nine English Textbook’. The mainaim of this study is to analyze the English textbook of grade nine in terms ofacademic aspect such as content, language, exercises, language skills andgrammatical aspect and physical aspect. The population for the studycontained 20 teachers with at least one year’s teaching experience of theinstitutionalized schools of Jhapa district. The researcher visited the field,collected the , tabulated, classified and analyzed them using statistical toolslike mean. The researcher analyzed the data statistically descriptively andcomparatively. The finding of the study shows that the subject matter is helpfulto meet the objectives of the curriculum. The language of the textbook issuitable and understandable for the level of students. There are not sufficientexercises for pair and group work. The pictures of the textbook are not clear,larger and of higher quality. There are, however, sufficient reading, writing,listening and speaking materials in the textbook. The textbook focuses fluencyand pronunciation aspects. Chapter one deals with introduction of the study. There is background of thestudy, significance of the study, objectives of the study, researchquestions,delimitations of the study and operational, definitional key. Chapter two dealswith review of theoretical literature, review of empirical literature, implicationof review for the study and conceptual framework. Similarly, chapter threedealswith methods and procedures of the study. There is design of the study,sources of data, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of datacollections and data analysis and interpretation procedure. And in chapter fourthere is analysis and interpretation of result and summary of finding. In chapterfive there is conclusion and recommendation.Item An Analysis of New Headway Intermediate Students’ Book Prescribed for PCL 1ST Year(Department of English Education, 2007) Dawadi, RajendraThis research was carried out to analyze the English textbook.‘New Headway’ for PCL 1 st year.For this, the textbook was analyzed interms of its physical and academic aspects. In the process of this study,the researcher collected data from both sources: primary and secondary.The primary sources of data were the responses made by the Englishteachers and students who had just completed this book and theresearchers. The secondary sources of data were the textbook itself, different theses in department, other books and journals related to the topic. In order to collect the data, two sets of questionnaire were prepared for theteachers and students. Apart from this, the researcher, himself studied thetextbook in great detail and two units of the textbook were randomlyselected and the analysis was made on the basis of the theoreticalframework fortextbook evaluation. The obtained data were tabulated andanalyzed using a simple statistical tool. The findings of the study are based on teachers’ perceptionsstudents’ perceptions and researcher’s own views on the textbook. Themain findings of this study are as follows: i. The textbook is appropriate in size and convenient forhandling and carrying for the students. ii. The textbook contains communicative activities.iii. The content items of the textbook are interesting because they introduce foreign culture to the students.iv. The textbook has the integration of four language skills (i.e. listening, speaking, reading and writing.)Item An Analysis of the Vocabulary Used in the English Textbook for Grade Six(Department of English Education, 2009) Ray, Sujay KumarThe present study entitled“An Analysis oftheVocabulary used in theEnglish Textbook for Grade Six”is an attempt to analyze thevocabulary items used in the textbook for grade six in terms of the totalnumber, parts of speech, phonological structure and morphologicalstructure. The data of thisstudy includes all the vocabulary items used inthe English textbook for grade six, published by ‘Government of Nepal’Ministry of Education, Curriculum Development Centre, written byNaresh Prasad Gautam et al.It was found that 1593 different vocabularyitems belonging to different parts of speech were used in the textbook.Out of them, the highest number of vocabulary items was nouns and theleast ones articles. This study is divided into four chapters. Chapter one deals with theintroduction intermsof the general background, review of the relatedliterature, objectives of the study and definition of the terms.The secondchapter deals with the methodology adopted for the study under whichthe sources of data, process of data collection and limitationof the studyare presented. Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation ofthe data. Mainly descriptive and analytical approaches have been used forthe purpose. Chapter four discusses the major findings andrecommendations of the study.Finally,this chapter is followed byreferences and appendices.Item Attitudes of Teachers and Students towards Tasks and Exercises Designed in The Grade Ten English Textbook(Faculty of English Education, 2011) Poudyal, Dor KumarThe title of this research work is 'Attitudes of Teachers and Students Towards Tasks and Exercises Designed in the Grade Ten English Textbook.' The main purpose of this study was to find out the attitudes towards tasks and exercises designed in the grade ten English textbook. To accomplish this study, a set of questionnaire was prepared and distributed to 40 English teachers teaching in different schools in Ilam district and 10 English teachers for focal group discussion and 60 students who are studying in grade 10 in different schools of Ilam district. The data collected from informants were analyzed and interpreted to find out the attitudes of teachers and students towards tasks and exercises. It was found that most of the teachers and students showed positive attitudes towards tasks and exercises designed in the grade 10 English textbook. This study consists of four chapters. Chapter one introduces the study in terms of general background, review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study and definitions of the specific terms. Similarly chapter two deals with the methodology applied to conduct the study. This consists of the sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the raw data obtained from the informants. The data were analyzed and interpreted by using simple statistical tools and presented with the help of tables, charts and diagrams. Finally, chapter four deals with the findings, recommendations and pedagogical implications of this study.Item The Content Validity of the English Textbook for Grade Nine(Department of English Language Education, 2006) Adhikari, Rudra PrasadThe ultimate goal of this study is to determine the content validity of English textbook for grade nine to find out to what extent the objectives set out in the curriculum are related to the content of the textbook. The findings of the study is based on perception of the experts, responses of the teachers, students and researcher himself on the contents of the textbook. The study consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction of the study. It includes the general background, objectives of the textbook for grade nine, content validity of the textbook, review of the literatures, objectives of this study and signification of the study. The second chapter deals with methodology applied to carry out this research by the researcher. The third chapter is an analysis and interpretation of the responses of English teachers, students and experts of ELT on the content validity of the English textbook for grade nine. Mostly this chapter is divided into five sections. The first section deals with the analysis of the teacher's view. The second deals with the analysis of the student's views. The third section deals with the analysis of the expert's view on the content validity. The fourth section deals with the researcher's analysis based on textbook. The end section deals with the calculation of the different views on the content validity of the textbook. The fourth chapter is related with the findings derived from the analysis and interpretation of the data. Mainly content coverage language functions were valid but other aspects like selection and gradation, language skills, interest level and language structures are less valid. Finally, some recommendations are made for further improvement of the textbook and some educational implications are referred.Item Cultural Elements and Associated Vocabulary Present in The English Textbook For Grade X(Faculty of English Education, 2009) Paudel, Ram PrasadThe present study entitled "Cultural Elements and Associated Vocabulary Present in the English Textbook for Grade X" is an attempt to study the presentation of cultural elements in terms of caste, religion and culture associated terms in terms of four major parts of speech, number of occurrence and philosophy as eastern and western culture. The data of the study were collected through secondary sources. All the cultural elements from the text were listed and altogether 9 cultural elements were found. One hundred and thirty-nine different culture associated vocabularies are found from the different texts of the book. It is concluded that the word 'Trousers' has the highest number of frequency, out of 139 cultural words, 5 verbs, 2 adjectives and no adverbs are found in the textbook. Most of the cultural elements present in the textbook also come from Nepal and most of them are from the Terai and eastern Nepal. This study has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction general background, review of related literature, objectives of the study and definition of specific terms. The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted for the study under which source of data, process of data collection and limitations of the study are presented. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of data in terms of cultural elements and associated vocabulary items. Mainly descriptive and analytical approaches have been used for the purpose. Lastly, chapter four deals with the major findings and recommendations of the study.Item Proficiency in the Use of Prepositions by Grade Ten Students(Department of English Language Education, 2006) Ammai, Narayan PrasadThe thesis entitled Proficiency in The use of Prepositions by Grade Ten Students is a practical study which deals with the topic itself. This thesis attempts to find out the Proficiency of Grade Ten Students in the use of prepositions and compare the level of proficiency in terms of School, area and sex. To carry out this research, 80 students(20 from each school) studying in two public schools two private schoolsof Kathmandu district were selected randomly. For collecting data, a setof test items consisting seven items was developed and administered tothe students. The students were intended to fill the gaps and describe thegiven pictures. The answer sheets were cheeked carefully and data wereanalyzed and interpreted using simple statistical tools of average andpercentage and descriptive method. The present study was limited withintwenty-five prepositions used in grad mine English textbook. By this study it was found that the government school studentscommitted more errors than the private school students. Amonggovernment school students, the rural government school students areweaker than the urban government school students. While comparing therural government school students, the girls' proficiency was the poorestone. This thesis consists of four chapters: Introduction, Methodology,Analysis and Interpretation and Findings and Recommendations. The first chapter includes the introduction part of the thesis. Itincludes ten sub topics. The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted during thestudy which consists eight sub-headings. Chapter third deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data.The fourth chapter comprises the findings and recommendations which are divided into two sub-chapters. Date: 2063-08-06 Narayan Prasad AmmaiItem A Study on the Effectiveness of Teachers' Guide of Grade Nine English in Teaching Reading Comprehension(Department of English Education, 2007) Sharma, Bishwo RajThis study aims at finding out the effectiveness of Teachers' Guide inteaching Reading Comprehension of grade nine English textbook. Forcarrying out the research forty students of grade nine of a governmentschool in Kathmandu district were taken as the sample population. A testpaper was prepared and administered to the students. Before administeringthe test for experiment a pilot test was done for the validity and reliability ofthe test paper. A pre-test was given to them in order to test their readingcomprehension ability. On the basis of the pre-test result the students weredivided into two groups based on odd-even ranking of the individualstudent's scores of the pre-test. Both the groups were taught for about amonth keeping in different classes. Group A was named experimental group and was taught using theteachers' guide and group B, non-experimental or controlled group, wastaught without using it in a usual way. Both the groups were taught the sameteaching items, using the same medium of instruction and instructionalmaterials side by side in two different time periods. For teaching differenttypes of reading comprehension texts, such as: stories, essays, drama,newspaper articles, notices, poems, were selected from the grade nineEnglish textbook. Twenty-four lesson plans were prepared but the lessonplans were slightly different for each group. Since the lesson plans for groupA were based on the instruction in the Teachers' Guide, necessaryinstructional materials were prepared and demonstrated in the class. At the end of the experimental teaching both the groups were givenpost-test at the same time period in the classroomand the result of both thetests (i.e. pre-test and post-test) were compared to determine theeffectiveness of the Teachers' Guide in teaching reading comprehension atgrade nine. The result shows that the use of Teachers' Guide is very mucheffective andbeneficial for the teachers teaching English at this level.This thesis consists of four chapters: The first chapter deals with the general background of the study. Itincludes the importance of the English language, a brief history of ELT inNepal, the role of teaching materials in teaching English, use of teachers'guide in Nepal and a brief account of secondary level English curriculumand teachers guide, a brief account of reading skill and readingcomprehension.
