Item Errors Committed by Grade Eight Students in Free Composition(Department of English Education, 2008) Dhakal, Rebat KumarUnless and until grammar, mechanics and organizational style are caredforinwriting, it may be better not to attempt writing at all, let alone free writing.Thestudy entitledErrors CommittedbyGrade Eight Studentsin FreeCompositionis mainly concerned with identifying and describing the errors inagreement, preposition,article,capitalization,cohesion and coherence in freewriting. For this study, 80 students studying in five different English schools inBhaktapur district were selected using disproportionate stratified random samplingprocedure, (i.e. 16 students from eachschool,consisting of equal number ofstudents from both the sexesgot selected). A set of subjective test items,consisting of three free writing questions, was theone and onlytool for datacollection. The frequency of errors in agreement, preposition, article,capitalization, cohesion and coherence were counted,computed and analyzed aswell. The study showed thatthe students committed the highest number of errorsin capitalization and the lowest number of errors in using prepositions.Theycommitted 3661 errors in total,out of which 613(16.74%),439(11.99%),487(13.30%), 810(22.12%), 715(19.52%) and597(16.31%)errors werecommitted in agreement, preposition, article, capitalization, cohesion andcoherence,respectively. The study consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with introduction to thestudy encompassing the general background, literature review, objectives andsignificance of the study. The second chapter deals with themethodology. Itencompasses sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure,research tools,process of data collection, and limitations of the study. Similarly,the third chapter, which is the core part of the study, includes the analysis andinterpretation of the data. And finally, the fourth chapter incorporates the findings,recommendations and pedagogical implications of the study.Item Errors Committed By Grade Eight Students in Reported Speech(Department of English Education, 2017) Bhandari, Chhabi LalThis study was mainly concerned with the Errors Committed By Grade Eight Students In Reported Speech The main purpose of this study was to identify errors in the use of reported speech a grammatical item of English. One hundred students of four different schools of Kapilvastu district were randomly selected for the study. Then the researcher prepared two sets of test items as a tool consisting of questions. He visited the selected schools and administered the test. The errors were examined and identified by him. The study found out that most of students were weak in using correct aspect of tense in reported speech. They committed 37 errors in tense, 45 errors in persons and 51 errors in adverbials. The students committed more errors in conversion in direct speech. They made 133 total errors out of 200 problems. Similarly, there were lack of teaching materials and lack of practice. This thesis is organized into five chapters. Chapter one includes background of the study. It also consists of statement of the problem, objectives of the study, significance of the study and delimitations of the study.The second chapter deals with the review of the theoretical literature,previous studies implication of the review for the study and conceptual frame work.The third chapter deals with the design and method of the study, population, sample, and sampling strategy, data analysis and interpretation procedures. The fourth chapter deals with analysis of data and interpretation of the result and summary of findings. The fifth Chapter has conclusions and recommendation of the study. It concludes the findings and presents some pedagogical implications and recommendations at policy related level, practice related level and further related research. The final part of the thesis entails references and appendices.Item Errors Committed in the use of Verbs in free Writing(Department of English Education, 2018) Dahal, AsmitaThe present study entitled'Errors Committed in the Use of Verbs in Free Writing' is an attempt to determine and analyze the performance an errors committed in the use of verbs in free writing by students of grade 10. To carryout this research, 40 students (10 from each school) studying in four community schools in Dolakha district were selected randomly. For collecting data, a test consisting of three essays was administered to the students. The students were intended to write some paragraphs on the given topics. In freewriting of the students only the use of verbs was analyzed. Accordingly, the findings were derived from their writing.From the data analysis and interpretation, it was found that students commit the highest number of errors in subject verb agreement in their writing. Likewise, the errors were found in omission of Be verb, spelling of verb, unnecessary use of verb, tense, verb form, omission of Have verb and use of verbs in Nepali language like SOV pattern. This thesis consists of five chapters. First introductory part includes general background,i.e. overview on English Language Education, grammar and error analysis. This chapter also deals with statement of problems, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of study, delimitations of study and operational definitions of key terms. The second chapter consists of review of related theoretical and empirical literature, implications of the study and conceptual framework. Likewise, the third chapter is related with methodology which includes design and method of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, data collection tools and techniques, study area/fields, data collection procedure and data analysis and interpretations imilarly chapter four consists of analysis and interpretations of results and summary /discussion of findings. Finally, the fifth or last chapter deals with conclusion and recommendations of the study followed by references and appendices.Item A Study of Errors Committed By Tharu Learnersof English in Subject-Verb Agreement(Faculty of Education, 2008) Chaudhary, PrameshwarThis thesis entitled“A Study of Errors Committed by TharuLearners of English in Subject-Verb Agreement”aims at finding outerrors and proficiency of Tharu learners of English particularly ninthgraders of public schools. This study is beneficial to the related andinterested personnel. For this study, the researcher utilized objective tool, suchas a testitem,which was administered to the target group and counted the errorsand scored the proficiency as aiming at fulfilling the objectives. Afteranalyzing and interpreting the proficiency and errors, the researcherfound that proficiency was not satisfactory. In total students performedbetter in item ‘A’.Students committed more errors inmainverbs ratherthan ‘be’, ‘have’ and ‘do’ verbs andboys committedmore errors thangirls. This research attempt is divided into four chapters. The firstchapter entitled ‘Introduction’ provides general background, Englishlanguage in Nepalese context, the Tharu language, an error, importanceof grammar, subject-verb agreement, definition of the terms, review oftherelated literature and objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with themethodology adopted for thestudy under which the sources of data, population of the study, samplingprocedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection andlimitation of the study are mentioned. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of the dataunder which total errors and total proficiency were analyzed andinterpreted statistically and descriptively. Both errors and proficiencywere vividly interpreted in terms of different variables such as sex, schooland item. VII The fourth chapter contains findings and recommendations of thestudy. On the basis of analysis and interpretation of the data, somefindings were listed and some recommendations were suggested in thischapter.This chapter is followed by references and appendices.Item A Study on the Errors Committed in the Use of Negation(Department of English Education, 2009) Raya, Prem BahadurThe present dissertation entitled "A Study on the Errors Committed in the Use of Negation" aims at identifying the errors in negative formation committed by the ninegraders in government-aided schools of Kathmandu district. Forthe study, fivegovernment-aided schools of Kathmandu district were selected. While selecting schoolsof Kathmandu valley, the methods of probability sampling designs were used by applyinglottery method. The researcher prepared five types of test items (A, B, C, D and E) for thecollection of relevant, valid and appropriate data. First of all a set of test items wasadministered among forty-five learners of Padmakanya Higher secondary school as apiloting test, and the answer papers were collected withina limited time. After collectingthe answer papers, process of identification, description, and explanation of errors wasdone in order to find out whether the questions were too easy or difficult for the learners.At last, the researcher found that in totality, the learners committed more errors ingrammatical negation rather than lexical ones. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one is an introductory chapter, whichincludes the general background, objectives of the study, the literature reviewed, andsignificance of the study. Chapter two includes the methodology adopted to carry out theresearch. Chapter three consists of the analysis and interpretation of data. Chapter fourconsists of the findings and recommendations of the study. It endswith a part headingreferences and appendixes.
