Item Communication strategies used by English learners of Sanskrit school(Department of English Education, 2017) Baniya, DipendraThe present study entitled Communication Strategies Used by English Learners of Sanskrit School was an attempt to find out the communication strategies used by the English learners of Sanskrit school. The study was carried out by adopting the survey research design. To fulfill the objective of the study, I selected thirty students from two secondary schools of Kathmandu valley as the sample for the study by using simple random sampling procedure. A set of questionnaire and observation checklist were used as research tools for data collection. The data obtained from the respondents were analyzed and interpreted descriptively and quantitatively by using simple statistical tools like percentile. The major findings of the research study included that note-taking, listening for detail information and listening all kinds of listening materials were the major strategies used in listening communication. Similarly, questioning, cooperation and practice speaking through teachers’ imitation were the major strategies used in speaking communication. Likewise, elaboration, exemplification, practice reading by using the words, phrases and sentences in meaning and practice reading by different activities were the major strategies used by the students to practice reading. In the same way, repetition, paraphrasing and copying with correction were the major strategies used in writing skill. Furthermore, synonymous and antonymous, contextualization and guessing were the major strategies used in vocabulary communication. Moreover, from the classroom observation, it has been found that note-taking, copying and questioning strategies were mostly used by the students in their classroom communication. I used quasi experimental research design in order to carry out this study. I selected 60 students studying in grade 8 in Baljyoti English Boarding School in Banganga Municipality -4, Kapilvastu. The selection was done applying non-random purposive sampling procedure and the data were taken through the methodology of primary source of data. The quasi-experimental research design was used with the aim of establishing a cause-and-effect relationship between an independent and dependent variable. After selecting the sample of 60 students, a pre-test was administered to determine the students’ initial proficiency on the selected items. The study was conducted within three weeks starting from June 4, 2023. I used test items (pre-test and post-test) as the main tools for data collection. The test items consisted of five different areas of evaluation namely: pronunciation, vocabulary, accuracy, communication and fluency. The findings showed a remarkable development in the students’ speaking skills after the introduction of cooperative learning techniques. Similarly, when teachers use cooperative techniques in their classes it automatically enhances their communicative skills and teacher doesn't need to translate the text in their mother- tongue as well. This research work includes five chapters. The first chapter of the study deals with the introduction of the topic in which background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definition of the key terms are included. The second chapter covers review of related literature. It consists of theoretical and empirical review of the literature, the implications of the review for the study and conceptual framework. Chapter three consists of discussion upon methodology and procedures of the study. It is an experimental study. The researcher tried her best to use the individual learning strategies. For that, she trained the learners, especially for the experimental group to use their cognitive power while learning. The primary sources of data were the grade eight students of Purkot Land Star Boarding School in Tanahun. They were divided into experimental and control groups. The researcher administered pre-test and post-test; data was gathered. It is concluded that the implementation of meta-cognitive strategies in learning grammar is relatively more effective and successful than the usual way of teaching. This thesis has been organized into four chapters. The first chapter deals with introduction review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. In this chapter, the researcher has explained her background knowledge of selecting the topic. She thought herself that her pervious way of teaching was rather teacher centered. The research wanted to train the learners to use their cogitative power while learning. For that, she selected the meta-cognitive strategy (one of the learning strategies) which gives the chance to think earlier before dealing with the task. The Second chapter deals with methodology. It includes sources of data (primary and secondary), population of the study, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, process of data collection, designs and limitations of the study. The third chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of the data. It consists of holistic and item-wise comparisons of pre-test and post-test results. The data obtained have been analyzed and interpreted with the help of statistical measures. Finally, the fourth chapter presents findings and recommendations.
