A key characteristic of diaspora is that a strong sense of connection to a homeland is maintained through cultural practices and ways of life. Cultural change is another major problem faced by the diasporic community especially by the diasporic people. When they try to settle in a new place they find several changes in the new society. It shocks them and they try to cling to their homeland culture by following it strictly. Dislocation causes severe problems to the diasporic people. When individual moves from his home country to a new land, the foreign atmosphere makes them sick. Based on the reasons for dislocation, the suffering faced by the diasporic people too changes. The gap of studying the feelings and emotions of expatriate writers is filled by the present research work.Item Facebook Use Pattern by Youths and Impact of Facebook in Social Networking in Pokhara(Faculty of Sociology, 2014) Dhakal, Khem NarayanFacebook is a popular online networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and videos, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. Although Facebook was created with the concept of allowing students and young adults to share their common interest, but with the time it has lost its true essence. Facebook research is essential to find out the social characteristic of youth, their knowledge about Facebook, to examine the social and educational impact, westernization and modernization impact in the Nepalese society and culture through the use of Facebook. Students of five higher secondary schools of Kaski district named SOS Gandaki,Rainbow Academic Home HSS, Golden Future HSS, Global Collegiate HSS, and Bethani HSS were selected for the study. This study aim to explore the Facebook use patterns of youth towards the use and impact of Facebook through descriptive and explorative research design. The framework of the study is based on symbolic interactionism. Many positive and negative impacts are observed, social disorder personal insult,breaking relationship, cultural change, westernization are found as notice able changes in the society by the use of Facebook. Users can create profiles, upload photos, video, send messages, keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues who are in and outside the country. So, Facebook is a very useful medium if used with in certain time limit but destructive for the community if misused. From sociological perspective, the negative effects of Facebook are more severe on the youths, the society and all social-cultural institutions however there are different positive implications of Facebook users.Item Gender Representation in Nepalese Folktales(Department of English, 2009) Rai, Tanka BahadurFolktales, the most popular form of Nepalese folklore in Nepal, are replete with the characters that perform their traditional gender roles on the basis of socio-cultural structure of Nepalese society that is shaped by the ideology of patriarchy. They are one of the key sites for gender construction in Nepalese society for they are backed up bythe cultural gender constructions of women as essentially inactive, lacking in volition and action, and always seeking to gain favour of the males as a strategy for survival. They are expected to be beautiful, submissive and tender, sacrificing their personal desires for the good of their husband, family and society. They have to comply with the rules and principles of modesty and myth of femininity. Moreover,they are the victims of ambivalent representation as divine manifestation as well as an incarnation of an evil. However, despite being victims of socio-cultural ideology at times they challenge this socio-cultural construction of gender veering towards trickster role which is a strategy for survival as well as a justifiable response to oppression. For survival in unusual situation, they devise different strategies which ultimately subvert their culturally-assigned gender roles, limitations and expectations. As a discourse of subversion in folktales, trickster role dramatizes the possibility of refashioning the truth about construction of gender in Nepalese society conferring upon them the position of agency, courage, protectiveness and power for violence.Item istoricity of Nepalese Society in Prahlad: AStudy of Bal Krishna Sama’s Prahlad(Department of English, 2010) Pokhrel, Poshan RajBal Krishna Sama's play Prahlad(1995 B.S.) tries to present the different aspects of contemporary Nepal. Hiranyakashipu, advocate of science and technology, pays great attention to suppress the god advocate like Prahlad. Around him the lives of Danavapura dwellers unfold the situation-the passionate pluto housewife, lovesick teenagers, scientific research, domination of spirituality and resistance against the oppression. By including such events within Danavapura, Sama has observed the follies and miseries of Nepalese society. Throughout Prahlad, there is a constant co- mingling of the physical, material and mundane life with the spiritual and divine sentiments. All of the scenario is transformed, however, into a microcosm of society, that provides Hindu insights into the nature of reality. Through the window of Danavapura, Bal Krishna Sama creates an intimate and intricate portrait of life in a beautiful Nepalese societyItem Perception and Practices towards Informal Care of Children: AStudy of Child Care Homes of Kaski(Faculty of Sociology, 2018) Bhattarai, GovindaThis thesis is entitled as "Perception and Practices toward Informal Care of Children: A Study of Child Care Homes of Kaski. The study consulted 30 child care homes of Kaski. Availability sampling was used by the study during which interview was the technique used for gathering information. The study was conducted with the objective of identifying perception and practices of child care homes in terms of informal care toward children. Though family is a primary institution from sociological point of view, the developmental sector identifies care provided by family as non-institutional care. Non-institutional care is synonymous to informal care. Informal care in development sector is understood as the care provided to the children in the settings other than that of institutions, mainly, child care homes. This study attempted to understand the perception of child care homes i.e. institutions regarding informal care. During the study, it was found that not all of the child care homes were completely aware on the meaning of informal care and the policies of the government. This is as erious issue which should be addressed by the concerned government authorities and the network of child care homes working in the district. Lack of sufficient knowledge on informal care among child care homes might led to the admission of children at child care homes who need not to be admitted. It is not only about the admitting a child at child care home but about changing the socialization process of a child. To be more precise, it is about not letting the child to grow in the way that s/he should be for proper socialization. The study has come up with the findings that the Government of Nepal has conducted a few programs to promote informal care. However, the programs have not been sufficient enough.Trainings, meetings and discussion sessions with child care homes on informal care are organized by the concerned government offices in the district. Only a few child care homes are aware of the fact that the government has promoted informal care in the communities by rewarding the individuals who are contributing for promoting informal care. Kinship care has been identified as the most widely practiced forms of informal care in context to Nepal. Kinship care is not only a widely practiced form of informal care but is also most relevant in context to Nepalese society. However, there are concerns regarding the success of this type of care in limited ethnic groups which could be another subject of study. Despite this fact, government has not done much to promote kinship care and make it more systematic. This study has shown that foster care and community based care are also in existence in Nepalese communities. However, these kind of cares are not in the level of kinship care. The study has shown that the grow-up of child in institutional settings supports the academic progress of the child to the most. Similarly, the grow-up of children in family or family like settings will contribute for the socialization of children to the most apart from education, health and discipline of children. It is therefore the children should be grown up in families for better socialization. The latest trend of receiving children by child care homes has suggested that the activities of child care homes are directed toward the promotion of informal care. A sall the children go to child care homes through District Child Welfare Board, the responsibility to ensure the presence of parents and relatives is now that of DCWB. Death of parents, abandoned by parents, having single parents, poverty, having step parents,neglect by parents, sexual abuse, alcoholic parents and so on are found to be cause of arrival of children at child care homes. Other than death of parents and sexual abuse, the children should not stay at child care home for which both the government and child care homes should be responsible enough. The child care homes have also started promoting informal care. In order to do so, they make in-depth assessment of the child prior to the admission. They also managed for regular communication between children and their parents & relatives so as to make reintegration process easier. Not only this, they also send the children to their parents and relatives during vacations. Wherever applicable, some child care homes are providing support directly to the families thus keeping children with their families. This should be appreciated and promoted by the government as well. This study has focused on the perception and practices of child care homes toward informal care. In order to understand the real difference in socialization of children in different settings,i.e. in institutional care and informal care, longitudinal studies should be conducted. It is therefore more studies in this sector are necessary. Similarly, the study on the children departed from the institutional care is also equally important.Item Postcolonial View of Nepalese Society: Reading Samrat Upadhyay's Stories(Department of English, 2008) Adhikari, Ramesh PrasadSamrat Upadhyay’s Arresting Gods in Kathmandu and The Royal Ghosts depict the picture of contemporary Kathmandu and society and culture which are filled with postcolonial ideology, suppression, displacement and self-alienation. The Western culture is inherently mixed up in Nepalese society and that formed a kind of hybrid society. The stories set in the backdrop of contemporary Kathmandu are purely designed to give the minute details of the contemporary society of Nepal about resistant and conflict as well as acceptance and surrender. Representation of marginalized groups, suppression of women and the issues of identity are the major concerns of the stories. The issues of feminism, representation and hybridity are gently arranged in the stories. Nepalese society in the Western metrolopolis formed a kind of diasporic society and Upadhyay tries to address such society in his story like New Jersey, New York and other cities of United States. In ‘A Refuge’, the pathetic character Kabita who has displaced in her own country and become internal refuge and victim of insurgency, this story shows how people are alienated in their native land. The glimpse of postcolonial impacts can be found in the story ‘This World’ where the bride’s parents wanted to give her hand to a Green Card holder old professor in America and Nepalese students like Kanti are eager to go and study as well as work in America. The city lifestyle of New Jersey and New York are compared to modern Kathmandu. In a way, there is cultural hegemony and materialism prevailed elsewhere in the city. Because of race, ethnicity, international affairs and globalization, Nepalese people veer towards colonization, not in political, but in socio-cultural aspect and overall concept. In order to maintain the hegemony over Nepalese people, the Western countries (previous colonizers) offer Nepalese people to work and stay in their nation.Item Problematised History in Manjushree Thapa’s Forget Kathmandu(Department of English, 2011) Paudel, JagadishThe present thesis is a study on Manjushree Thapa’s Forget Kathmanduin the light of New Historicism as a methodological tool. The researcher has discovered that Manjushree Thapa, a writer, has portrayed the tacit and hidden side of the Nepalese history and has successfully redrawn the new boundaries of it from the king Prithvi Narayan Shah’s unification period of Nepal to the parliament reinstatement in 2006. Thapa courageously shows the bleaks, fissures, seamy sides and disjunctiveness of the long marginalized aspects of the linear history of Nepal and interrogates the authenticity of it and valorizes the margin.Item Rajan Prasad Pokhrel's Beyond the life lines: A critique of Nepalese Socio-Cultural Paradigm(Department of English,, 2017) Bohara, Rup BahadurThis study analyzes and explores the novel Beyond the life lines written by Rajan Prasad Pokhrel as a socio-cultural paradigm that aims to present an analysis of the novels plot-characters to show how the novel brings out with socio-cultural problems of the Nepalese society and presents a slice of its history. The main issue of this study is to refer social and cultural problems prevailed in the then Nepalese society with an inadequacy of the political independence for the marginalized people. The study uses the political-cultural theories to analyze the text. Within and around the political-cultural aspects, the study uses the concept of class struggle, exploitation,dehumanization, oppression and humiliation to analyze the issue in the study. The novel begins with a short introduction of the writer and his background, introducing the political-cultural aspects, and then presenting an in-depth analysis of the novel's plot and characters to show how it is a critique of the Nepalese society. The study finds that Pokhrel reflects the social problems of the then society through his novel.The concepts of high caste and low caste, the touchability and untouchability, and the aristocrats and the ordinary people are based on the amounts of power being used. Insecurity, indeterminacy, uncertainty, humiliation and political short sightedness, lack of commitments and unfair practices and a number of discrepancies in almost all areas have caused serious frustration and fugitive tendencies in the people.Nepal experienced a large amount of bloodsheds in the recent years, but the people's expectations of the progressive transformations in the social and political systems have been badly betrayed by the political leaders.The sufferings of the punishments of the poor, helpless and deserted women on the false charges of witch and witch-crafts are still alarmingly formidable in the backward areas. This research concludes that progress and reformation are very important for the people of all walks of life which is possible only through dynamic and revolutionary thoughts.Item Recovering the Lost Voices of Nepali Dalit Subaltern: Teleserial Dalan(Department of English, 2022) B.K., Dammar BahadurTeleserial Dalan, written by Ahuti and directed by Nabin Subba, is an agency for unfolding social realities of the Nepalese Dalit. So, this research mainly studies Dalan from the perspective of subalterns to analyse the political sensibility and ideologicalvoices of Dalit community in the Nepalese Society.The main character Manavgoes from the serial and concluding that it is the sense of political self which enables one to question the system and its apparatus.Without ideological awareness, one loses critical perception;one becomes victim of one's own subjective whims.In this Tele Serial Manavre presents to the Dalit forums and representing the voices of collective Dalits. The research draws on Luiss Althussure's concept of "ideological state apparatus" arguing that ideology is a system representation of the recovering the lost voices of subaltern. Manav, Juthe, Harihar and Tulki have triangulate nexus relations in terms of caste and creed that represents political and cultural sensibility in the serial.The research aims at exploring the case of Dalit Subaltern and transformation socio-cultural apparatus in the context of Tele serial Dalan for covering the lost voices of marginalized community. The finding of the research is that subaltern can have an ideology and they are subsequently adopting as a national citizen having with own voice.Item Stigmatization of Women in Rimal’s Masan(Department of English, 2010) Dhakal, KrishnaWritten by the poet and playwright Gopal Prasad Rimal and translated By Dr. Sangita Rayamajhi, play Masan demonstrates the stigmatized scenario of the traditional middle class Hindu family. The main concern goes on the study on cause and effects of the stigma which destroyed life of two women of the play, Dulahi and young woman. By presenting the reality of elite Brahmin family and their concept about marriage, child birth and existential values of women the writer shows the stigmatized situation of women as well as traditional Hindu practice of contemporary Nepalese society. So this realistic play is the social document which confirms stigmatized situation of women.Item Women Empowerment Through Saving and Credit Co-Operative Activities in Pokhara, Nepal(Department of Sociology, Prithivi Narayan Campus Pokhara, 2015) Khadka, JyotiNepalese society is male dominated, female are suppressed and restricted. The social and economic status of women is meager. They are backward compared to male. Women do not believe on conservative ideology if they are given quality education and training. They can advocate for the women's awareness and empowerment; become self-dependent and empowered. This study was carried out in ward number 11 and 12 of Pokhara sub-metropolitan city of Kaski district. The main thrust of the study was to assess the effectiveness, altering gender disparities and socio-economic impacts and changes in the life of the women. To meet the above mentioned objectives, both primary and secondary data were collected and analyzed. Total 109 female members or respondents were interviewed, asked questions and observed. The primary data were collected by using different techniques. Whereas, secondary data were collected from dissertations, books, statistical year books, internet, financial institutions, articles etc. This cooperative has demonstrated that they have been providing the quality service for economic and social development. Within short period of its establishment, it has been successful to collect huge capital from the local people. Women number is more in this cooperative and unique because it is urban based cooperative. This co-operative has helped in women empowerment. It has played a vital role to uplift the qualitative life by providing easy service. But, this cooperative has failed in finding alternatives in reducing unemployment and promoting other much needed skills. It is deemed that programs focusing on women should be launched effectively and in more efficient way in the near future. Free distribution of benefits, encouraging the skill generating trainings, fair and equitable benefit sharing should be implemented for the better mechanism of reducing the poverty and women empowerment. Despite few loopholes of the cooperative, the findings of the study shows good impact of cooperative, such as reduction in gender disparity, increase in participation of women, rising awareness in women, coping the problem, attainment of qualitative life, making them able to speak their mind, rise in confidence (psychological), gaining respect and recognition in the society, playing the role of leadership to educate other women, decision making process, women’s social-economic empowerment, finding the sources of earnings and other activities. To sum up, the management system of this co-operative depicts the participatory democracy of a nation , nevertheless it should be further boosted by providing institutional, technical and moral supports by the government and other institutions and organizations so as to develop well institutionalized financial sector, prone to socio-economic development.Item Women's Empowerment Through Employment (A SociologicalStudy of Lalitpurcity)(Department of Sociology, 2016) K.C., SubashNot available
