Item Challenging the Traditional Gender Roles in Pradeep Nepal’s Novel 21 st Century's Sumnima(Central Department of English Kirtipur, Kathmandu, 2009-02) Sen, Keshmayahis research work has studied Pradeep Nepal's novel, 21 st Century's Sumnima as a novel that projects the dynamic and courageous woman to resist the traditional gender roles, based on patriarchal ideology which is conventional, blind and biased. Pradeep Nepal has demonstrated a strong woman who is versatile with daring and revolutionary spirit against the biased concepts of patriarchal ideology. The gendered ideology is operating as the hegemony, which is the internalized concept of man as superior and woman as inferior. So, to deconstruct it, women consciousness and their resisting activities and behaviors are highly advocated in the novel by portraying a strong woman character, Sumnima. Sumnima is a rebellious lady who is much concerned about the women value and emancipation to subvert the male hegemonic supremacy existing in the society. She has crossed through the vicissitudes of life and has attained the strong conception of maturity. Thus, Sumnima is the symbolic representation of feminine strength and power.Item Code Mixing In ‘Lekhakki Swasni'(Faculty of Education Tribhuvan University Janta Multiple Campus, Itahari, Sunsari, Nepal, 2015) Yadav, ShivdharThis research study entitled, “English Code-Mixing in Lekhakki Swasni”, is a study of English code-mixing in the Nepali novel “Lekhakki Swasni"written by Pragati Rai. Its aim centralizes to the analyses in to the use of English code in the novel "Lekhakki Swasni". It aims to find out and analyze English code-mixingin terms of major word classes, frequency of occurrence of the word and context in which code-mixing takes place and find out the attitude of literary writers and readers towards English codemixing in the Nepali novel. The Primary sources of the data of this study were 20 literary writers and 20 literary readers from Sunsari Multiple Campus Sunsari and Gograha College, Biratnagar, Morang. The researcher used judgemental/purposive sampling procedure for the collection of data. The finding of this work shows that there is a large amount of English code-mixing in the novel, „Lekhakki Swasni‟. Nouns were maximally used followed by adjectives, verbs and adverbs respectively. Regarding the context of code-mixing, the writer was seen to have mixed English words on such context as: talking about Education, profession and post, science and technology, hotel and food, modern equipment, dress, film, vehicles, etc. The study has been divided into five chapters. The first chapter deals with introduction which in turn, consists of general background, statement of the problem, rationale of the study, objectives of the research, research questions, significance of the study and delimitation of the study. The second chapter deals with review of the Related literature and conceptual framework, implication of the reviewed literature and theoretical framework. The third chapter includes methods and procedure of the study which in turn, consists design of the study, sources of data,population of the study, sampling procedure and sample size, tools for data collection, process of data 9 collection, data analysis and interpretation procedure, result and discussion and summary, conclusion and Implication. The fourth chapter deals with analysis and interpretation which in turn, consists of result,frequency wise analysis of the English expression,context wise analysis of code-mixing,analysis of literary writers attitude towards English code-mixing in the Nepali novel,and analysis of literary reader‟s perception towards the English code in Nepali novel.The fifth chapter deals with finding and recommendations which in turn consists of finding of the study and pedagogicalimplication and recommendations.Item Current Practices of Code mixing in Nepali Novel: A Case of Priya Sufi(Department of English Education, 2019) Neupane, MaheshThe research study entitled Current Practices of Code mixing in Nepali Novel: A Case of Priya Sufi was conducted to identify English mixed codes in novel Priya Sufi in terms of fundamental units of grammatical structure and word class, to explore different contexts of mixed codes and to suggest some pedagogical implications. I have used survey research design to carry out the research work. The population of the research consisted of all the mixed English expressions that were used in novel. I have used purposive non-random sampling strategies for collecting data for my study. For sample, I have used 586 mixed English expressions. Likewise, I employed the observation checklist and note taking as tools for the secondary sources of data collection. Although, my study is based on survey research design but the data wereanalyzed descriptively being based on percentage and frequency. From the findings of the study, it can be concluded that there were 586 different mixed English expressions from them words were used maximally and there was no any use of clause in the novel. In terms of frequency, the most frequent word was phone and there was no any repeated sentence. Similarly, nouns, verbs and adjectives were used commonly but the adverbs were used in very few numbers. Similarly, the findings showed that the most used situational contexts were hospital and health, education, college and study. However, gym house and publication house were the least used situational contexts. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction of the study which consists of background of the study, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key terms. Similarly, second chapter contains of review of theoretical as well as empirical literature and implications for the study. Moreover, it includes the conceptual framework. Likewise, the third chapter incorporates with the methods and procedures of the study, which covers design, and method of the study, population, sample and sampling strategies, research tools, sources of data, data collection procedures, data analysis procedures and ethical considerations. In the same way, the fourth chapter includes the analysis and interpretation of the data. Furthermore, the fifth chapter incorporates the findings and conclusions of the study followed by some policy related, practice related, and further research related recommendations based on the study. Finally, the references and the appendices, which are necessary to the validation of the research, have also been presented.Item English Mixed Codes in the Nepali Novel 'Mistika'(Department of English Language Education, 2021) Rajbhandari, Om BahadurThis is the study on English Mixed Codes in the Nepali Novel 'Mistika'. It aimed at finding out the English codes used in the Nepali novel Mistika and examining the mixed English codes in terms of word classes. All the English codes used in the novel constituted the sample for the study. The sample was selected by using purposive non-random sampling procedure. The data collected from the novel were descriptively analysed and interpreted with examples and illustration. The findings of the study show that English codes in the Nepali novel ‘Mistika’ have been used heavily in almost all the paragraphs of novel; the author has used English codes at the word level, phrase level,clause level and sentence level; however, word level code mixing is excessive in comparison to the others. Out of different English expressions, nouns and adjectives are maximally mixed in the selected novel. Similarly, other categories of mixed codes included verbs, adverbs and interjections. The authors witched the code and mixed English words heavily in the novel; and it might be the reasons like: authors’ preference of English codes, lack of appropriate Nepali terms and the advancement of English language. This thesis consists of five chapters along with references and appendices at the end. Each chapter is divided into necessary heading and subheadings. First chapter deals with background of the study, statement of the problem,rationale of the study,objectives of the study,research questions, delimitation of the study and operational definitions of the key terms. Second chapter deals with review of related theoretical and empirical literature, implications of the review of the study and conceptual framework of the study. Likewise, third chapter portrays design, method, population, sample and sampling strategy, data collection tools and techniques, source of data, data collection procedures, data analysis and interpretations procedures and ethical consideration of the study.Moreover, chapter four deals with analysis of data and interpretation of the results. Finally, fifth chapter presents major finding list, conclusion of the study and implication for the policy and practice related level and further research related.Item Ethical Memory and Politics of Trauma: A Critical Reading of Palpasa Café and Forget Kathmandu(Central Department of English Kirtipur, Kathmandu, 2008-12) Paudel, Devendra SharmaThis thesis analyses the cultural politics of memory and trauma in Narayan Wagle's Palpasa Café and Manjushree Thapa’s Forget Kathmandu. My argument is that Wagle and Thapa's memory of war is contaminated by the cultural ideologies. Their memory, thus, takes an ethical turn and becomes a part of the larger ideological politics. Their narrativazion of trauma – contaminated by ideology uses the language of demonization. The thesis argues that writer's authorities, editing and sensorship practices ultimately lead their literature of trauma that narrativization to traumatic memory. Wagle uses largely against the Maoists in Palpasa Café while Thapa does the same against the Napalese Army in Forget Kathmandu.Item Linguistic Gaps in The Translated Nepali Novel:Summer Love(Department of English Education, 2018) Chaudhary, KamalThis research work entitled A study on Linguistic Gaps in the Translated Nepali Novel:Summer Love was carried out to find out and analyze the linguistic gaps at structural level in terms of voice system, auxiliaries,prepositions, articles and word order.To meet the objectives of the study, there searcher selected the survey research design. The data were collected from the secondary sources.The researcher selected 100 linguistic items from the original Nepali text and its translated English version Summer Love. The novel was selected using purposive non-random sampling procedure. Only observation was the major tool for data collection and data were analyzed using mixed research designs. From the analysis of data,it was found that voice system is of three types in Nepali language and of two types in English language,i.e.active voice and passive voice. But bhabbachya has not changed to any voice system in English language.Auxiliaries are not used in Nepali language but only used in English language as well as prepositions are post positions in Nepali language because preposition sare used attached with nouns. But in English language preposition sare used as a separate particle before nouns.Articles are not used in Nepali language because there are no any definite and indefinite articles in SL. But in English language articles are used.About word order, Nepali language structure has S+ O+ V pattern but English language structure has S+ V+ O pattern. That is the great differences between English language and Nepali language. The present study consists of five chapters.The first chapter deals with the introductory information about the study. It consists of seven sections:background of the study, statement of the problems, objectives of the study,research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key words.Similarly, the second chapter deals with the related theoretical literature, review of the related empirical literature,implications of the review for the study and conceptual frame work. The third chapter is related to the methodology. It deals with the methods and procedures x of the study which consist of the design of the study, population and sample of the study,sampling procedure, study area/field, data collection tools and techniques, data collection procedures and data analysis and interpretation procedures. The fourth chapter is concerned with the analysis of the data and interpretation of the results and summary/ discussion of the study. The final or fifth chapter deals with conclusion of the whole study and some use ful recommendations for the policy level, practice level and further research level.The researcher, in this chapter, also suggests some practical pedagogicalimplications on the basis of the findings of the study.This chapter is followed by reference and appendices.Item Narrative and Symbolic Construction of Nation in BP Koirala’s Sumnima and Narendra Dai(Central Department of English, 2012) Parajuli, DipendraThis project looks into BP Koirala’s novels Sumnima and Narendra Dai from the perspective of the narration of his vision of nation. Koirala’s concept of nation emphasizes on common spirit and joint effort of people that give rise to the feeling of unity. He foregrounds humanitarian values and backgrounds ethnic, religious supremacy. His notion is close to Benedict Anderson’s and Ernest Renan’s idea of nation since all of them focus on humanitarian ground, emotional connection achieved through either ‘shared history’ or ‘images’ and ‘symbols’, and a sense of collective effort or desire to live together. Koirala, aware of ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity of Nepal, focuses on compromise and new culture or narrative that can incorporate people of diverse background together to raise the sense of collective effort to knit them together in the fabric of nationhood. Homi K. Bhabha’s idea of narrating a nation combining both ‘pedagogical’ or historical and ‘performative’ or working together in present and future dimensions looks similar to Koirala’s view of creation of new unity with respect to historical background. Sumnima begins with ‘pedagogical’ conflict between the Aryan and the Kirat culture resembling cultural combination of Nepalese society. By shattering the Aryan’s sense of ethnic and religious supremacy, by making the voice of humanity, spoken through Sumnima, victorious and ending the novel happily with commitment between the two cultures to go ahead with collective effort, Koirala constructs nation with an attempt to awaken Nepalese people to the significance of coexistence, reconciliation and cultural harmony. Narendra Dai connects Narendra’s comeback from foreign to his wife with the idea of nation. His coming back to home or the ‘imagined community’ where he can share the ‘images’ ‘history’, his readiness to ‘split’ and live the life of ‘joint effort’ with his wife whom he hated reflect the features of nation. At the same time the use of symbols like Nepal, the Koshi river and Holi give the impression that the ‘interior life of the novel’ matches with ‘the exterior life of the reader’s life.’Item Patriotism in Palpasa Cafe(Faculty of Art in English, 2017-03) Thapa, Sushil KumarThis research examines the novel Palapsa café by Patriotism theory which is a kind of psychological stimulus triggered by things that are related to one’s country. This novel is the story of a Kathmandu-based artist, Drishya, who falls in love with a Nepali American returnee, Palpasa. Along the way Drishya also sees for himself the devastating effects of Nepal’s conflict in the hills, via a mysterious old college friend now turned Maoist. These three characters who narrate the story in turns. Palpasa is pushed ahead by the intense sense of expressing love for her motherland. That is why she comes back to her motherland by discarding every available opportunity she gets in America. Unlike the romantic egoist driven by far-fetched ideas, they are committed to the real life. Characters like Drishya and Palpasa demonstrate endurance, vision, determination and intense will to overcome every hurdle that occurs in their lives. In their encounter with all the challenges and hurdles lies traces of heroism traits and attributes. These traits and attributes are examined excluding all the unrelated and unrelated details. The novel also, obviously, reflects the author’s own experience as a Brahmin male based largely in Kathmandu. I hope to show that Wagle’s journalism background rather than his caste identity is crucial in understanding Palpasa Café’s successes and failures. It is to Wagle’s credit that he has written about what he knows and not attempted to include many different aspects of Nepal which would, incidentally, be a very boring exercise in paint-by-numbers prescriptive fiction. Unfortunately Palpasa Café currently seems to be more discussed for a literary prize that it should or should not have won, as well as for its marketing process than for its actual content.One intention of translating the novel into English is surely to help foreigners, both tourist and expatriates alike, to understand what happened in the recent Nepali past.Item Quality of Translation In Terms Of Degrees Of Equivalence(Faculty of Education Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur Kathmandu, Nepal, 2017) Bhattarai, PrakashThis present research study entitled „Quality of Translation in Terms of Degrees of Equivalence: A Case of Seto Bagh was conducted to investigate the degrees of equivalence between two versions, their frequency and the techniques of translation and contribution of technique/s in optimum degree of equivalence. Both versions of the novel were used as the sources of data. Under survey design, interpretative and analytical procedures along with qualitative data were used. Fifty cultural terms were randomly selected from the novel named „The Wake of The White Tiger‟ and Seto Bagh and analyzed them under various techniques according to the meaning conveyed by them. The researcher categorized, analyzed and interpreted the data with the help of Ekta Comprehensive Nep- Eng Dictionary (1st ed.) and Oxford Advanced Learners‟ Dictionary (8th ed.). Among six degrees of equivalence, optimum degree of equivalence was the most frequent one which covered forty eight percent where as partial, poor and zero were found as least frequent ones, It was found that in addition to literal translation, sense translation, definition, substitution and transliteration were commonly employed techniques of translation . The thesis has been divided in to five chapters. First chapter entitled Introduction‟ includes background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study, and operational definitions of the key terms. Similarly, second chapter entitled „Review of Related Literature and Conceptual Framework‟ illustrates the major study of translation like: language, culture, religion, translation studies, their relationship, techniques, gaps including introduction of the book. The third chapter „Methods and Procedures of the Study‟ includes major elements of the study especially design and method of the study, population , sample and sampling strategy, research tools, sources of data(primary and secondary), data collection procedures, data analysis and interpretation procedures and ethical considerations. Fourth chapter „Analysis and Interpretations of the Results‟ is the central essence of the study as it analyzes the data and interprets of the results. Fifth chapter „Findings, Conclusion and Recommendations‟ summarizes the findings with main conclusion and provides some suggestions as per the findings derived and with special recommendations in level wise.Item A Study on Semanantic Equivalence: A Case of Translated Novel ‘Rupamati’(Faculty of English Education, 2012) Tiwari, SudipThis research work entitled A study on Semantic Equivalence: A Case of Translated Novel ‘Rupamati’ has been carried out to analyze the semantic equivalence through sentence level between the source text (henceforth: ST) and translated text (henceforth: TT). The source of data consists of the original Nepali text and its translated English version Rupamati. The ST and TT are deemed as sample universe. From this, the selection of the sample size consists of sixty pairs of sentences from both texts. For sampling procedure, the random sampling method has been applied. The different tools such as observation, checklist and syntactic structure and semantic analysis have been used for the data analysis. It is found that the translator has carefully chosen different lexical item in TT to fulfill semantic equivalence. Sometimes, the translator himself gets derailed and the work of translation cannot meet the semantic equivalence. The translator has sometimes used extra lexical item which is not found in ST. It is found that, the translator has split the syntactic structure of the compound sentence into two in TT. It is also found that the translator has mostly omitted exclamatory marker in TT whereas the ST exclamatory sentences contain it. This thesis comprises four chapters. Chapter one deals with general introduction, review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with method and procedure adopted to carry out the research. It contains information on the source of data, sampling procedures, tools, process of data collection and limitation of the study. Chapter three consists of the analysis and interpretation of the data. Chapter four deals with the major findings of the study on the basis of the analysis and interpretation of the collected data. It also deals with some recommendations made, based on the major findings of the study. Finally, chapter four is followed by the references and appendices.Item The Techniques and Gaps in Translation of Cultural Terms: A Case of The Novel ‘Seto Bagh’(Faculty of Education Engish, 2017) Thapa, Gyan Bahaduresearch work entitled The Techniques and Gaps in Translation of Cultural Terms: A Case of the Novel ‘Seto Bagh’ was an attempt to discover with the techniques and gaps in translation of cultural terms used in the novel Seto Bagh. The main objectives of the study were to identify the Nepali cultural terms in the novel Seto Bagh and their equivalents in English translation and to find out the techniques employed in the translation of Nepali cultural terms into English version and point out the gaps in translation process. The study was carried out by adopting the survey research design. The data were collected from the secondary sources. Observation was the major tool for data collection. Hundred cultural terms were selected from the novel and the context of the respective terms was provided. The cultural terms were selected by adopting purposive non-random sampling strategy. The major finding of the study was that eight different techniques: literal translation, blending, borrowing, claque, substitution, definition, deletion and addition were found while translating the cultural terms. Out of them, definition technique was found to be the mostly used techniques and blending and borrowing were the least used technique while translating the cultural terms from SL to TL. Deletion technique was not much used in translation and it should be minimized as far as possible. This study consists of five chapters. The first chapter deals with general background, statements of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key terms. The second chapter deals with the review of theoretical and empirical literature, conceptual framework of the study and an overview of the novel ‘Seto Bagh’. Likewise, the third chapter deals with the xi methodology adopted for the study in which, design of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy of the study, research tools sources of data, data collection procedure and data analysis and interpretation procedure of the study are discussed. The fourth chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the collected data descriptively and using simple statistical tool, i.e. percentage. Similarly, the fifth chapter deals with the findings based on the analysis and interpretation of the data, conclusion derived from the findings and recommendations. This chapter is followed by references and appendixes.
