Item High and Low Ethos in Emile Gaboriau’s The Lerouge Case(Department of English, 2019) Sah, ChandniThis research paper attempts to scrutinize the high and low ethos of characters inEmile Gaboriau’sThe Lerouge Case. It examines the types of ethos characters have used in the fiction in order to persuade each other through their rhetorics, especially through the ethos. The issue of accountability, persuading each other, moral values, norms and characteristics of different characters is examined in this paper. By taking the theoretical insights on rhetorical issues proposed by theorists like Aristotle, Kenneth Burke, and Gerard A. Hauser, the study reveals the ethos chosen by characters and their ethical background. The novel is a detective fiction where characters like; Tabaret, Valerie, Claire, Albert, Noel, Marie Pierre Lerouge, M. Daburon, Gevrol, and others have used persuasive positions according to their characteristics, background and the need to persuade other. This fiction is filled from of suspense as it is the genre of detective fiction where characters’ ethos is changeable according to the situation they are facing. It has shown the changeable rhetorics of character according to their motif, purpose, and desire which is analyzed in detail in this paper.Item The Politics of Rhetorics in Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland(Department of English, 2017) Kattel, PrativaThis research work examines the use of rhetorical devices which justify the central idea of the novel The Lowland. Lahiri uses best kairotic situation to deliver the intended idea more effectively. The powerful means of persuasion in The Lowland is the presence of right rhetorical devices, such as logos, pathos and ethos with reference to Naxalite movement which justify the central idea of text. She has a big challenge to appeal audiences by bringing the local issue of Naxalite movement and its consequences which she never experiences. The Lowland is to some extent different from a major number of contemporary works in the sense that, this fiction has played with history and fictional representation mergeing into one another. Her argument uses different rhetorical strategies to prove their statement and such rhetorical strategies are comprised of different types of rhetorical devices. The analysis of use of rhetorical devices will be the basic tool to study the novel. A good way to think about kairos is to consider how rhetor tries to persuade audiences based on unique timing and current events. The researcher will critically examine the writer justice to rhetorical devices (logos, pathos and ethos) in the text by bringing Naxalite movement. Classical rhetoricians like Aristotle will be studied to assist the project.Item Switching Rhetoric: A Rhetorical Analysis in David Cameron’s Selected Speeches(Department of English, 2021) Thapa, DipendraThe paper analyzesrhetorical shift in Cameron’s speeches and claims that he brings rhetorical variations to create a persuasive environment while conveying his ideas.The speeches are analyzed through the theoretical framework of rhetorical analysis.Aristotle’s definitions of rhetoric and rhetorical tools have been the major theoretical ideas; Jeffrey Walker and Mark GarrettLongakar’s idea of rhetoric has been used assupporting theoretical weapons for this research.Itevaluates the languageusageof David Cameron at first and analyzes the rhetorical shift sin the speeches.There search paper concludes that Cameron’s rhetorical variations in his speecheshave been his weapon to be persuasiveand there fore are significant in the modern political arena.In this way, the paper helps the readers in understanding how the politicians manipulate the audience by using and switching their rhetoric to create the persuasive atmosphere.
