Item Causes of Students’ Failure in English(Faculty of English Education, 2011) Karki, Umesh JungThe main objective of this thesis was to determine the Causes of students’ failure in English in S.L.C. examination.To accomplish the objective of the study, the researcher collected data from fifty students i.e., S.L.C. successful, group and failure group, five English teachers’, five principals, D.E.O. and Ten parents from Dailekh district using random sampling procedure.To obtain the data, the researcher prepared a questionnaire from both close ended and open ended. Close ended questionnaires were prepared for the students’ facilitate the respondents to choose the best alternative. Open ended questionnaires were prepared for English teachers and interview schedule was conducted for principals, D.E.O.and parents.The attitudes of different groups of people towards the causes of students’ failure in English of Dailekh district was studied and the major findings of this research were recorded such as negligence of the students, lack of professionalism on teachers,low guidance of parents to their children,traditional method oriented teaching learning process,poor economic condition of the students, lack of teaching materials,lack of exposure to learning English, lack of modern teaching process, flexible policy of the state to open new school haphazardly,psychological problems of the students, lack of supervision of teaching process,English is being a foreign language, exam oriented concept of students, lack of qualified English teacher, students tend to cheating instead of preparation,incompleteness of the course in the scheduled time and lack of additional activities to learn English in the schools are the major causes of students’ failure in the S.L.C. exam in English. This study consists of four chapters.The first chapter deals with introduction to the study that includes general background, importance of English, introduction to secondary English curriculum, principles, methods and techniques, history of the S.L.C. examination, causes of college students failure, review of related literature, objective and the significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology of the study. It contains sources of data, population of the study,sampling procedure, tools for data collection and limitation of the study .Chapter three deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data using different tables.The fourth chapter consists of findings and recommendations of the study and finally references and appendices are given.Item Challenges of Teaching and Learning Reading Skill at Secondary Level(Department of English Education, 2011) Parajuli, ArjunThe thesis entitled Challenges of Teaching and Learning Reading Skill at Secondary Level is an attempt of the researcher to find out the main challenges of teaching and learning reading skill at secondary level schools in Nepal. It also aimed to analyze the causes of those challenges. To achieve these objectives, both the primary and secondary sources of data were used in the study. Descriptive and analytical study design along with both qualitative and quantitative data were used. A sample of five secondary level community schools from Sindhupalchwok district was taken on the basis of personal judgment of the researcher. Fifty students (10 from each 5 schools) and 5 teachers (1 from each 5 schools) were selected by using the same sampling procedure. The study has found that teaching and learning reading at school level has some challenges. The challenges were found to be related to both the teachers and the students. Most of the challenges associated with teaching and learning of reading are related to reading comprehension. The challenges were found to be the: problems of pronouncing vocabulary, recognizing the words, internalizing the sense of the text, dealing with complex structures of sentences, teacher centered traditional teaching methodology, low participation of the student, and use of mother tongue in teaching. The thesis has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the general background, literature review, objectives and the significance of the study. The second chapter contains the methodology which is sub-chaptered as the sources of data, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and the limitations of the study. The third chapter includes the analysis and interpretation of the collected data obtained from the field. The fourth chapter has the findings and recommendations of the study.Item Perceptions of Secondary Level English Teachers on Deductive and Inductive Teaching Methods(Faculty of English Education, 2012) Sharma, SamikshaThis research study entitled “Perceptions of Secondary Level English Teachers on Deductive and Inductive Teaching Methods” aimed to find out the perceptions of secondary level English teachers towards the use of deductive and inductive teaching methods. This study was carried out using both the primary and secondary sources of data. The data for the study was collected through a set of questionnaire. As a primary source of data, the researcher purposively selected 40 secondary level English teachers of 20 different government-aided schools of Kailali district. From this study, it has been found that majority of teachers were implementing deductive method of teaching in the classroom. They thought inductive teaching method was more effective and suitable to implement in secondary level. They used deductive method more because it was easy and economic for them. This study mainly includes four chapters. The first chapter introduces the study in terms of general background, review of the related literature, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter concerned with the methodology used in the study: the sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure, and tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Likewise, the third chapter of the study consists of analysis and interpretation of the data. The fourth chapter presents the findings derived from the analysis and interpretation of the data. It also suggests some recommendations on the basis of the findings. The final section presents the references and appendices which give validation to the research.Item Secondary Level Students’ Reading Habit of The Prescribed Textbook(Faculty of English Education, 2011) Ban, Puskal DevThe present study entitled “ Secondary Level Students’ Reading Habit of the Prescribed Textbook” was intended to check whether the secondary level students of Surkhet study the prescribed textbook of compulsory English or not, and to findout the purposes for reading other materials if they did not read the textbook. To accomplish the objectives of the study, the researcher collected data from 90 students of the randomly selected 15 different schools of Surkhet, 15 secondary level English teachers teaching at those schools and 30 guardians. To obtain the data, the researcher prepared structured interview schedule and some questionnaires. Teachers were asked open-ended questions. Students and guardians were asked to tick the best alternative to the structured interview schedule, and they were asked to drop their opinion in the open-ended questions. The major findings of this research are that 71.11 percent students, 93.33 percent guardians and all the teachers accepted that the students did not read the textbook to prepare for the SLC exam. According to them, the main cause of not reading the textbook was that the textbook did not cover all the questions in the SLC exam. This shows that the evaluation process of secondary level directly affects the students’ reading habit of the prescribed textook. Most of the students ( i.e., 71.11percent) read practice books and other materials available in the market as they cover most of the marks in the SLC exam. The study consists of four chapters and other sub-topics. The first chapter deals with the general background, language education, English language education in Nepal, review of the related literature, hypothesis, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter describes the methodology used to carry out the research work. The third chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of the data. The fourth chapter deals with the findings and recommendations of the study on the basis of the analysis and the interpretation of the data.
