Item Effectiveness of Trekking Guide Training in Nepal (A Case Study of Tamang Heritage Trail of Rasuwa District)(Central Departmental of Rural Development, 2007) Thapa, Raj KumarThe present study entitled “Effectiveness of Trekking Guide TrainingIn Nepal (A Case Study of Tamang Heritage Trail of Rasuwa District)" has beencarried out by Mr. Raj Kumar Thapa, student of the Central Department ofRural Development, Tribhuvan University and Kirtipur. In the study, the researcher hastried to touch upon a variety of issues related with trekking guide’s daily life. The studysite is characterised by abject poverty, illiteracy and backwardness. With the dominationof typical Tibetan and Tamang culture, the area of unparalleled scenic beauty is anunspoiled place. The area is highly potential for tourism development because of goodcombination of the unique culture and the exceptional natural beauty. Only the efforts ofDDC & TRPAP to bring about changes in the area through social mobilisation, entrepreneurship, infrastructure development, cultural preservation and floating of loansat a cheaper rate are very appreciable. With the intervention of this development agency, the area has witnessed some changes. The process of social mobilisation andtransformation is time taking as well as difficult. Despite huge prospects, tourism has not become a major source of income for thelocals and this profession is not the main occupation of local inhabitant. One of themajor reasons for this is that the inflow of tourists into Nepal has been low due to thedecade-long internal conflict coupled with political unrest. As researcher, I found that the income level of the Trekking guide has notincreased as expected. The area still requires necessary focus on education, awareness oftourism and trekking, relating training to the trekking guide and job opportunities. The study isspecialized centered on Effectiveness of Trekking Guide Training inTHT.Sofar as sampling procedures and methods are concerned, random procedure wasadopted according to the nature of topics and universe. Mainly the research is based onquantitative approach and partially qualitative. Questionnaire survey, key informantinterviews and on-the-spot observations were used as tools for primary data collection.Item Potentiality and Challenges of Village Tourism: A Case Study of Sirubari of Syangja District(Central Department of Rural Development Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, 2011-11) Chapagain, Tika RamThis thesis entitled “Potentiality and Challenges of Village Tourism: A Case Study of Sirubari of Syangja District" has been prepared for the fulfillment of Master Degree in Rural Development from the Central Department of RD, TU, Kirtipur. It is accounted that the three big industries of the world are Oil, Automobiles and tourism. In Nepal, the first two are not presently feasible due to the geography and lack of technical knowledge that is why the third big industry i.e. tourism is very noticeable. It is one of the best industries for Nepal because we have a lot of resources for it, not only because the world crowded countries are beside of us. So, for the sustainable national development, tourism is regarded as an efficient and trustful approach. This research has been conducted based on field survey applying exploratory cum. descriptive in which 10 locals, 10 tourists and neighboring villagers and 5 tourism related personnel were taken as sample. It is selected by using simple random sampling method. Major research methods used in this study are Households survey, Sample respondent's Interview, Focus Group Discussion, Key Informant's Interview, etc. This study found that animal husbandry and agriculture is the major occupations of this area. Even Nepal tourism plays a determining role in its economy. It has become a pillar for economic development in recent years. In this scenario, there is no doubt that expansion of tourism to villagers will contribute more to the economic development for the country like Nepal. Nepal has many attractions in the form of snow-capped peaks, excellent trekking and rafting opportunities, interesting wildlife, significant religious sites and culturally important sites. These have well- placed Nepal for tourism development. Village tourism is coming- up as a new concept for promotion and development of tourism in Nepal and it can give as an appropriate momentum to the tourism sector. This concept is more relevant in the context of a country like Nepal which is made up of villages and diverse ethnic groups with typical and unique culture and traditional life styles. Apart from these, this village tourism is possible without building up any concrete infrastructures. So it is a meaningful position that can give a boost to the Nepalese tourism. Similarly, Palpa is the district with great village tourism potentiality and Madan Pokhara VDC is one of the new emerging destinations of Palpa and Nepal in the form of “Village Tourism”. The researchwork on“Problems and Prospects of Ecotourism Development: A CaseStudy of Badimalika, Bajura”was conducted during August 2008, with theaim to know the impacts of tourism on natural environment and socio-cultural condition of this region as well as to find out the remedial ways tocombine the environment with the tourism avoiding the possible problems. Direct field study, observation and questionnaire survey method wasconducted to know about the positive and negative impacts of tourism onenvironment and socio-cultural conditions of this region. Nepal, the Himalayan Kingdom, with its magnificently variedlandscape, rich cultural heritages, diversity of flora and fauna, beautifulmountains, lakes and rivers has attracted travelers throughout the worldand it is an important source of foreign exchange. Natural beauty and socio-cultural life style with untouched by modernonslaughts, high level of biodiversity with over hundreds of species offlowering plants, birds, butterflies, amphibians and mammals, highpastureland with famous religious temple Badimalika, wetlands, streams, waterfalls, rocks, and so many things which are potential for touristdestination. Badimalika receives substantial number of tourists including pilgrimsevery year. Environmental problem has also increased along with theincrease in tourism along the trails as well as in the destination itself.Intensive use of environmentally sensitive areas, overgrazing of thepastureland, unmanaged wastes, litter and garbage, etc. are majorenvironmental problems found in Badimalika surrounding. Tourism has created some direct employment opportunities to thelocal people and most of them have got indirect benefit. Households along the trekking route and destination derive economic benefits through sale oflocal products like vegetables, milk, ghee, egg etc for the hotels andmotels. The development of tourism would promote village and hotelindustry as well as agriculture and livestock farming also flourish due to thedevelopment of tourism. The development of tourism in this remote area has broughtdemonstration effect of tourist on the host population, commercialization ofculture, change in traditional agricultural and livestock dependent lifestyles and use of imported rather than indigenous material along the trailswere the major impacts in this region. On the other hand, tourism supportsfor education and help to know about foreign culture. It is also helpful forthe conservation of local culture and tradition which is the major source oftourist attraction on the site. In order to reduce the negative impacts of tourism, clear policy, planand strategy should be formulated regarding the number of tourist andnumber of hotels and their location and activities. Alternative energy sourceshould be developed to reduce reliance on wood. Continuous educationregarding the sanitation and conservation and its proper use should be givento the local people. New infrastructure should not be permitted and noticeabout what to do and what not to do by trekkers for mitigating their impactin nature should be published and kept in different places along the trail.
