Item Achievement in Writing by Nepali and Tharu Native Speakers(Department of English Education, 2010) Chhetri, ManojThe present study aims to assess the achievement in writing by Nepali andTharu native speakers. The main focus of the study was directed towardwhether the achievement of writing differs because of difference inthe nativelanguages of the students; if it differs then to what extent? The study wascarriedout using bothprimary and secondary sources of data. For primary data,the ninth grade students of a government aided secondary school were taughtwriting. Altogether 26 students (13 Nepaliand 13 Tharu native speakers) wereselected as sample and taught writing on the basis of the original texts of theEnglish text book of grade nine. The representative examples from the threetypes of writing namely controlled, guided and free writing were chosen forteaching. The sampling procedure was purposive because ofthe availability ofthe Tharu students. During the data analysis the Nepali native speakersdominated the Tharu students in terms of scores all along. But the trend andrate of progress in writingseemed similar in both of the groups. In conclusion,different native languages of the learners do not necessarily show thesignificant gap between theirachievements.The first chapter consistsof background,definition of language, first language,second language, foreign languageand filter language.The theory of languageacquisition, monolingualism and bilingualism are also introduced in the firstchapter.The first chapter also includesthe writing skills, mechanics and othercomponents ofwriting,correctingscoring written works.The origin of actionresearch, its definition and process have been put in this chapter. The finalpartsof this chapter arereview of the related literature, objectives and significance ofthe study.The second chapter deals with the methodology applied in the study,the sources of data, sample population, sampling procedure, tools andprocedures for data collection. The chapter also states the limitations of thestudy.The third chapter presentsanalysis and interpretation. The fourth chapterconsists of the findings and recommendations based on the analysis andinterpretation of data. References and appendices are attached at the end.Item Achievement of Coherence in Writing(Department of English Education, 2009) Regmi, Chet NathThe title of the research is ‘A Study on Achievement of Coherence in Writing’. The main purpose of this research was to find out the use of coherence in writing by bachelor level students. In order to do so, the researcher collected the data from two colleges in Chitwan district. The sample population consisted of 80 students and they were selected by using simple random sampling procedure. After collecting the data, the students’ achievement was analyzed on the basis of marks and percentages they secured. It was found that the students studying in Chitwan district were good in achieving coherence in paragraph writing with the average percentage of 67.7. This thesis consists of four chapters: chapter one deals with general background, review of related literature, objective of the study, significance of the study and the definition of thes pecificterms. Chapter two deals with methodology. It consists of source of data, population of the study, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Both primary as well as secondary sources were consulted for data collection. Eighty students from two different colleges of Chitwan district were randomly selected as the sample. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of the obtained data. Chapter four consists of the findings and recommendations of the study. The findings and relevant recommendations have been presented on the basis of the analysis and interpretation of the data. This chapter is followed by references and appendices.Item An Analysis of English Textbook: A Case of Highersecondary Compulsory English Grade Xii(Faculty of Education, 2007) Bhusal, KulanandaThe research entitled"An Analysis of English Textbook: A Caseof Higher Secondary Compulsory English Grade XII"is an attempt toanalyze the grade XII English textbook in terms of physical and academicaspects and find out whether the language materials used in the textbooksare sufficient to meet the objectives set out in the curriculum fordeveloping focusing on reading and writing language skills. for thisresearch work the researcher read the textbooks 'Meaning into Words'upper intermediate and 'The Heritage of Words' and different booksrelated to the textbook analysis to collect data and then prepared twoseparate sets of questionnaire for three subject experts and twenty subjectteachers who have at least a year of teaching experience in the +2 level ingovernment school in Chitwan district. The obtained data were tabulated and analyzed using a simplestatistical tool of percentage. The major findings of the study are:Readingand writing materials are sufficient. The distribution of reading and writing materials is found satisfactory. The textbooks providesufficient grammatical structures, reading passages, and writing exercises.The textbooks also, focus on communicative skill. Broad functional areasof language are covered. The cover design and colour is suitable. The sizeof the books are appropriate. The quality of both books is good. Thetextbooks do not represent the cultural values of Nepalese society. Someof the unitsappear to be much above the linguistic competence of 12 graders. The textbooks lack pronunciation aspect of language. Some ofthe pictures and illustrations in the texts are ambigious and difficult todeal with them. The quality of the paper is not so good. The books haveweak bindings. VIII th The study has four chapters. The first chapter deals with theintroduction. It consists of general background, defining curriculum,syllabus and course of study, textbook, literature review, objectives of thestudy and significance of the study. The second chapter concerns with the methodology used to carryout the research works. Chapter three includes analysis and interpretation of the data,analysis of the books and the subject teachers, and the subject experts, theresearchers perception on the qualities of the textbooks and thecalculation of the different views. Chapter four presents the findings and recommendations which aresummed up from the analysis and interpretation of the data collected forthe purpose of research.Item Effectiveness of Pictures in Writing Paragraph(Department of Education English, 2011) Neupane, RabikiranThe thesis entitled Effectiveness of Picture in Writing Paragraph has been conducted with the aim to find out the effectiveness of the use of pictures in teaching paragraph writing in English. To achieve this objective of the study, both the primary and secondary sources of data were used. A sample of 30 grade nine students from a public school at Bhojpur district was taken as informants for the fulfillment of the purpose of the study. The study found that the use of pictures in teaching is a requirement for successful learning of writing paragraphs. The use of pictures makes the class lively and provides students memorize the text more easily than any other efforts. The study recommended that the focus in using effective teaching materials at class can make the teaching and learning language more productive and purposeful. If the teaching became able to foster communicative competence in the learners, the teaching would be more meaningful and the learning would be more permanent and effective. The thesis has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the general background, literature review, objectives and the significance of the study. The second chapter contains the methodology which deals with sources of data, sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and the limitations of the study. The fourth chapter contains the findings and recommendations of the study.Item Errors Committed by Grade Ten Students in Writing Letters(Department of English Education, 2010) Magar, Dochandra KunwarThe research entitled “Errors Committed by Grade Ten Students in Writing Letters” is an attempt to find out the errors that grade ten students commit errors on agreement, articles and cohesion. To carry out this study, the researcher has selected four schools from Gulmi district, i.e. two public schools and two private schools through judgemental sampling and 80 students, 20 from each school, were selected randomly. The main objectives of the research is to find out the secondary level students’ ability to use agreement, articles, and cohesion. The researcher used both primary and secondary sources of data. A set of test items consisting of three letter writing questions was the tool for data collection. The first item was personal letter, the second letter of sympathy and the third letter of application. The research findings show that the total errors committed by the students were nine hundred and forty-four. The students committed four hundred ten errors in agreement, two hundred four errors in articles, and three hundred thirty three errors in cohesion. The students committed the highest number of errors in agreement and the lowest number of errors in articles. The researcher found that the students were comparatively better in the use of articles than in agreement and cohesion. Similarly, the students were better in the use of cohesion than agreement. Likewise, the findings showed that the students of private school were the most able and the students of public school were the least able to use the listed grammatical areas and cohesive devices. This thesis comprises four chapters. Chapter one deals with introduction which consists of general background, review of the related literature, objective of the study, significance of the study. Moreover, general background of the study includes writing skill, components of writing, writing letter, classification of letters, error analysis, stages of error analysis, importance of studying learner’s errors, errors in writing letters. Chapter two deals with the methodology. It consists of sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, process of data collection, and limitations of the study, 9 grammatical items and cohesive device, test item wise errors in each school, school wise errors in test item. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation in terms of errors in grammatical item and cohesive devices, test item wise errors in each school, school wise errors in test item. Chapter four incorporates the findings and recommendations of the study. The findings have been outlined on the basis of the analysis and interpretation of the data, and appropriate recommendations for the pedagogical implications have been suggested. This chapter is followed by references and appendices.Item Free Writing Proficiency of Grade Eight Students(Faculty of English Education, 2019) Basnet, ShantaThis research study entitled Free Writing Proficiency of Grade Eight Students:A Comparative Study sought to explore free writing proficiency of grade eight students from institutional and public schools of Morang District. In order to find out the students ’free writing ability a set of test items consisting different free writing questions were asked to the students of institutional and community schools.This is the survey research study.To address the objectives of the study,40 students were selected from two(one institutional and one community)schools as a sample using non-random sampling procedure.This study examined students’ free writing ability in terms of the mechanics,grammar,cohesion,coherence,clarity,economy and completeness in holistic way.This research was carried out by using both primary and secondary sources of data and a set of test items was used as a tool for data collection.The study reveals that free writing proficiency of the students was quite satisfactory.The above results shows that institutional school students were found more proficient in comparison to community school students in essay writing. This thesis comprises five chapters.The first one presents the general background of the study,statement of the problem,objectives of the study,significance of the study,delimitation s of the study and operational definition of the key terms. Chapter two consists the review of related theoretical literature,review of empirical literature,implications of the study and conceptual framework.Chapter three includes design and method of the study,population,Sample and sampling strategy,research tools, sources of data,data collection procedure,data analysis procedures.Chapter four deals with analysis of data and interpretation of result and summary and discussion of findings.Similarly last chapter deals with findings, conclusions and recommendations.References and the appendices are presented in the final part of this study.Item Techniques Used by The Teachers While Teaching Writing Skills(Central department of English Education, 2010) Sharma, AshmitaThis research study entitled "Techniques Used by the Teachers While Teaching Writing Skills" aims to find out the innovative techniques used by the teachers for the grade eight students of government-aided schools. The researcher collected data from both primary and secondary sources. For the primary sources, the researcher selected five different teachers of different schools of Kathmandu valley by using judgemental sampling procedure and fifty students of these schools by using random sampling procedure. The observation checklists and survey questionnaires were employed as research tools for data collection. From the study, the researcher has found that writing exercises such as pre-writing exercises e.g. introduction to superscription, salutation, opening, body, ending and subscription in writing letters, free-writing exercises e.g. essay writing, and letter of application to the class teacher were used by the majority of the teachers. Similarly, Harmer's techniques such as ‘what are they doing?’, fill in the blanks, parallel writing, description of persons, and dictation techniques were used fairly. Contrary to this, use of visual materials and communicative activities were poor and Yalin's picture flower technique was rarely used. This thesis comprises four chapters. The first chapter deals with introduction which consists of general background, review of related literature, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology used in the study: the sources of data, (both primary and secondary), sample population and sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. The third chapter consists of analysis and interpretation of the data to find out the techniques used by the teachers while teaching writing skills at lower secondary level. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted by using frequency distribution table, bar-diagrams, and pie-charts. The fourth chapter presents the findings derived from the analysis and the interpretation of the data. It also suggests some recommendations on the basis of the findings. The final section of the study includes the references and appendices.Item Washback Effect of Examination: A Case of Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking(Department of English Education, 2011) Bastola, ChiranjibiThe present study entitled “Washback Effect of Examinations: A Case of Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking” was carried out to investigate the washback effect of exam. The course ‘Reading, Writing and Critical Thinking’ is one of the courses prescribed for B.Ed. 1st year majoring English. In order to collect the data, both the primary and secondary sources were used. For this process, I selected fifty students of B.Ed. 2nd year majoring English and ten teachers teaching the course in five different education campuses of the Kathmandu Valley. Moreover, the questions asked in the previous examinations (2066 and 2067) were collected and analyzed on the basis of the specified objectives in the course and finally, thirty classes were observed. Questionnaires were distributed to the selected students and teachers. After collecting the data and responses, they were analyzed and interpreted and then recommendations were put on the basis of the findings. The major findings of the study were: the teaching learning process was exam oriented, lecture method was widely used, previously asked questions encouraged the students to guess the future questions, teachers were not trained, instructional materials were not used in the classroom and evaluation system was not effective. The study is divided into four chapters. The first chapter consists of the background, quality of good test, introduction of the course, review of the related literature, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted to carry out the research work. The third chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of the data. The last chapter includes the findings of the study and some important recommendations are made on the basis of the findings.
