Item CaseSystem in Englishand Bajhangi(Central Department of Education, 2011) Joshi, Dev RajThisthesis entitled "CaseSystem in Englishand Bajhangi" is thefirst research work on the 'Case System of Bajhangi'. This research has been conducted inorder to find out the cases in Bajhangiand to find outsimilarities anddifferences between Bajhangi and English cases. The researcher collected datafrom both primary and secondary sourcestoconduct the research. The samplepopulationwaseighty native speakers of the Bajhangi dialect,whowereselected using judgemental/ purposive sampling procedure. A questionnairewas used as atoolfordata collection.Englishcases were taken from secondarysources. The datawere analyzed, interpreted and presented descriptively byusing tables and illustrations. The major findings of this research clarify thatBajhangi has a complex case system. This researchshows that common casesin EnglishandBajhangiarenominative,objective, instrumental, locative,possessive, dative,comitative, vocative and temporal.Themain case markersinBajhangi dialectare the post-positions.Naturalforce is also taken as aninstrumentin theBajhangidialect. Bajhangi has more number of casemarkersthan English but the Bajhangi casemarkersareflexiblein nature than Englishcasemarkers. Some casemarkers in Bajhangi are overused. Thisthesis consistsof four chapters. The first chapter deals with theintroduction of the study. The introduction consists ofdefinitionsof language,importance oftheEnglish language,multilingual setting of Nepal, introductionto cases,cases in English and Nepali languages, contrastive analysis, literaturereview, objectives of the study and significance ofthe study. The secondchapter deals with the methodologywhich in turnconsists of sources of data,samplingprocedure,research tool, process of data collection and limitations ofthe study. The third chapter is the core of the thesis. It is concerned with theanalysisof thedata along with comparison of Englishand Bajhangi casesystems. The forth chapter deals with the findingsand pedagogical implicationsof thestudy. The presentstudy includes both consanguineal and affinal types across five generations from bothperspectives viz, male and female ego in Koyee Rai and English for this purpose, theresearcher collected data from Koyee Rai from Sungdel and Dipsung V.D.Cs of KhotangDistrict of Eastern Nepal. The sample population of this study consists of ‘eighty nativespeakers’ of Koyee Rai who are inhabitant of Sungdel and Dipsung V.D.Cs. To obtainrequired data, questionnaires were distributed to sample population using ‘non-randomjudgmental sampling’ procedures. He further consulted secondary sources like books,magazines, journals and theses related to the topic. The main objectives of the study was tofind out the Koyee Rai terms used to refer to various kinship relations across five generationsaltogether and to compare and contrast Koyee Rai consanguineal and affinal kinship termswith the terms in English and to suggest some pedagogical implications. The major findingsare that the Koyee Rai language is rich in terms of kinship terms in comparision to theEnglish language. And the systems of Koyee Rai terms and English terms have therelationship of ‘Mono-Koyee Rai vs. Multi-English and Mono-English vs. Multi-Koyee Rai.’In addition to this, there is a slight difference between one-to-one correspondent relationshipof the appellative and addressive forms to signify the same relation of given languages. The study consists of four chapters. Each chapter, in turn, has been divided into various sub-chapters. Chapter one consists of introduction with general background, review of the relatedliterature, objectives of the study, significance of the research and definition of the study.Chapter two deals with methodology of research work. It is sub-divided into sources of data,total population of the study, sample population, tools for data collection, process of datacollection and limitations of the study. Likewise chapter three consists of analysis andinterpretation of the study. This chapter mainly consists of Koyee Rai and English kinship terms, correlation between Koyee Rai and English kinship terms and comparision ofconsanguineal relations in reference. Likewise chapter four is for findings, recommendationsand pedagogical implications of the study. The processes of negative and interrogativetransformation in the Doteli language have been described and comparedand contrasted them with those in English.The major findingsin a nutshell are the negative markers 'nai' and 'jan' occurin different situations in Doteli dialect whereas English negative marker is'not' which is used in different situations; Doteli negative imperative markeris 'jan' which is placed before the verb whereras English negative imperativeis formed by placing donot/don't at the beginning of the sentence; DoteliYes/No Question are formed by rising the intonation, whereas EnglishYes/No question is formed by placing the auxiliary verb at the beginning ofthe sentence; Doteli wh-word occurs after the subject whereas English wh-word occurs at thebeginning of the sentences.The dissertation is divided into four chapters. The principalobjective of the study was to find out the proficiency of grade XII students ofdifferent streams in interpreting orthographic and para-orthographic texts on thebasis of variables: streams (Education vs Management vs Humanities), gender(boys vs girls), test items(subjective vs objectives), etc. For the comparative study, the sample population consisted of 120 studentsstudying indifferent disciplinesof four different colleges of Kathmandu district.From each college 30 students were sampled. The study was entirely based on theprimary source of data i.e. the test-items administered to the students. The testpaper includes four different items viz. two texts, ahistogramand abardiagram ofthe same texts. The study revealed that the students weremore proficient in interpreting para-orthographic texts.Theywere more proficient in para-orthographic texts thaninthe orthographic ones. Likewise, in comparison to the test items, the students werefound to be more proficient in objective than in the subjective test items. The study consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduces the study in termsof its general background, review of related literature, objectives of the study andsignificance of the study. The second chapter deals with methodology. It encompasses sources of data,population of the study, sample population, tools for data collection, process ofdata collection and limitationsof the study. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of the data. The marksobtained by the students have been analyzed to find out their proficiency ininterpreting orthographic and para-orthographic texts. Statistical tools such asmeasures of central tendency, correlationco-efficient, etc. have been used in theanalysis of the marks. The fourth chapter presents the findings of the study and finally somerecommendations and pedagogical implications have been made on the basis ofthe findings.Item Verbs of Harvesting and Wedding Ceremony in Nepali, Awadhi and English(Department of English Education, 2008) Khan, TasauwarThis thesis entitled "Verbs of Harvesting and Wedding ceremony in Nepali, Awadhiand English"makes a comparative study of the verbs used to refer to pre-harvesting andharvesting, and pre-wedding, wedding and post-wedding in the Nepali, Awadhi andEnglish languages. All the data were collected through informal talks, unstructuredinterviews and focused group discussions (FGD) with the native speakers of all threelanguages. Altogether 80 informants were used for the study. The main finding of thisstudy is that there were the highest number of verbs in the Nepali language in allactivities and theleast verbs were found in the English language but Awadhi had moreverbs than English and less than Nepali. This thesis has four chapters: Introduction, Methodology, Analysis and Interpretation,and Findings and Recommendations. The first chapter containsgeneral background,review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study.Likewise, the second chapter includes sources of data, population of the study, samplingprocedure, research tools, and process of data collection andlimitations of the study.Similarly, the third chapter consists of the analysis and interpretation of the data obtained.Lastly, the fourth chapter comprises of findings and recommendations of the study.
