Item Effectiveness of Games in Teaching Action Verbs at Grade Five(Central department of English Education, 2012) Parajuli, RoshaniThe research entitled “Effectiveness of Games in Teaching Action Verbs at grade five” is an attempt to find out effectiveness of games in teaching actions verbs. In order to do so, the researcher collected the data from both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources were the students of grade five studying in “Amar English Higher Secondary School.’ The sample consisted of forty students. The students were pre-tested to determine their proficiency level in vocabulary items before starting one month of teaching. They were divided into two groups on the basis of odd-even ranking of performance of the pretest. After dividing them into two groups, one group was taught using games but another one using usual technique. After completing the teaching, the post test was given using the same pre-test items. After that, the results of both pre and post-tests were compared. The main findings of this thesis is that teaching action verbs through the use of games at Primary level is more effective than teaching without using games. The study consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction, it consists of general background of the study, review of the related literature, objective of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted for the study. It encompasses sources of the data, population of the study, sampling procedures, tools for the data collection, process of the data collection and the limitation of the study. The third chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of the data. The last chapter deals with the findings and recommendations. On the basis of the analysis and interpretation, some significant findings are listed. On the basis of these findings, some recommendations are madeItem Effectiveness of Reinforcement in Language Classroom(Faculty of English Education, 2011) Paudyal, Manoj PrasadThe present research study entitled 'Effectiveness of Reinforcement in Language Class Room' aims to find out the main objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of reinforcement in language classroom. For, this Shree Ne. Ra. H. S. School Karaikhola, Surkhet was selected purposively. Thirty students studying in grade 8 were the primary source, since the primary data for the study were obtained by administering tests among them. At the entry point, a pre-test was administered among them. Then, they were divided into two groups on the basis of result of the test to make equal level of proficiency of both the groups and were termed as ‘controlled’ and ‘experimental’. Both the groups were taught the selected items for the equal length of time by the researcher. But the controlled group was taught without using reinforcement, except the textbook and blackboard, whereas, the experimental group was taught using reinforcement. At the end of the classroom teaching, a post-test was administered with the same set of items used in the pre-test. The obtained data were compared, analyzed and interpreted to determine the effectiveness of reinforcement in language classroom. By this study, it was found that the reinforcement has very high positive effect on teaching English, since the experimental group performed better in all the areas in posttest. Controlled group had performed lowly in all the areas in post-test with lower progress rate in comparison to that of ‘experimental’ group. Using tight instruction as well as using punishment and stick was not effective to teach English. Students could not give attention to study English using negative reinforcement. This thesis comprises four chapters. Chapter one deals with the introduction of reinforcement with the short history of their use in teaching the English language in Nepal. It also includes the review of the related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two deals with the sources of data, population and sampling procedure, process of data collection, and limitations of the study. The researcher has made use of both the primary and secondary sources of data. The third chapter is devoted to the interpretation and analysis of the data collected. To analyze the data, the average scores were tabulated and the difference between pre-test and post-test was calculated in terms of average scores and percentage. The group which had higher progress rate was regarded better group. Chapter four deal with the findings and recommendations of the study. The findings have been outlined on the basis of the analysis and interpretation of the data, and appropriate recommendations and pedagogical implications have been made.Item Effectiveness of Scanning in Developing Reading Comprehension(Central department of English Education, 2012) Ghimire, Buddha ManThis thesis entitled Effectiveness of Scanning in Developing Reading Comprehension is an attempt to find out the effective way of reading for comprehension. The main purpose of this research was to explore the effectiveness of scanning to develop reading comprehension. The study was an experimental type in nature. The students of grade IX of Shree Saraswati Secondary School in Gulmi district were selected through non random sampling procedure. First of all, the pre-test item was assigned to find out the current proficiency level of the students. After grouping the students, 22 classes were taught and the post-test was administered in order to find out the progress and effectiveness of scanning in developing reading comprehension. The average increment percentage of experimental group was 17.8% and the average increment percentage of controlled group was only 11%. From the comparison of the result of the two tests, it was found that the students under experimental group did better than the controlled group in the post-test. It can be recommended that the students would be benefited through scanning reading in secondary level. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one deals with general background, review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. Chapter two consists of the methodology adopted for the study. It consists of sources of data, population of the study, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Moreover, both primary and secondary sources were consulted for data collection. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of data. Chapter four consists of the findings and recommendations of the research. The findings and relevant recommendations have been presented on the basis of the analysis of the data. The references and appendices are the concluding parts of the research.
