Abstract
This thesis entitled Effectiveness of Scanning in Developing Reading Comprehension is an
attempt to find out the effective way of reading for comprehension. The main purpose of this
research was to explore the effectiveness of scanning to develop reading comprehension. The study
was an experimental type in nature. The students of grade IX of Shree Saraswati Secondary School
in Gulmi district were selected through non random sampling procedure. First of all, the pre-test
item was assigned to find out the current proficiency level of the students. After grouping the
students, 22 classes were taught and the post-test was administered in order to find out the progress
and effectiveness of scanning in developing reading comprehension. The average increment
percentage of experimental group was 17.8% and the average increment percentage of controlled
group was only 11%. From the comparison of the result of the two tests, it was found that the
students under experimental group did better than the controlled group in the post-test. It can be
recommended that the students would be benefited through scanning reading in secondary level.
