Abstract: This research entitled“A Study on Strategies of Teaching Short Stories" was intended to find out the strategies used in teaching short story at Higher Secondary Level in Surkhet.It also aimed to suggest some pedagogical implications. In the process of research, the researcher prepared different tools i.e. questionnaire,interview schedule and observation check list. The researcher selected twenty English teachers from fourteen Higher Secondary Schools and hundred students from ten Higher Secondary Schools as the research informants for data collection. The questions used in the questionnaire were both open-ended and close-ended questions to the teachers and students respectively. He also took interview and class observation of both English teachers and students regarding the strategies of teaching short stories.The researcher also conducted the class observation of English teachers focusing the teaching activities in pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading stages. It was found that English teachers performed very poor activities in pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading stages. The researcher also found that a great majority of English teachers did not describe plot, setting, point of view and critical appreciation of the short stories. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter is an introduction which includes general background, review of related literature, objective of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter includes methodology which consists of source of data, sample population of the study, tools of data collection, data collection procedure and limitations of the study. The third chapter comprises the analysis and interpretations of data obtained from the questionnaire, interview and class observation from English teachers and students at the higher secondary level. Finally,the last chapter consists of findings and recommendations.
