Abstract: | Laxmi Prasad Devkota’s Muna Mada is the tale of plight of two lovers–an outcome of the existing socio-economic demarcation of the then society. Their desires of leading a happy and content conjugal life remains unfulfilled as the cruel fate takes its toll on them before they could really entertain what life is all about.Muna defies the lure of lust and wealth of the aristocratic culture, while her husband Madan was away from home to keep the family intact. She is enticed by the then so-called high ranking people and the local youths but she represses her desire and remains ever faithful to her husband. Similarly Madan is the victim of the societal mentality and, thus is determined to fulfil the material desires of his mother, and hence goes to Lhasa, Tibet to earn a fortune, but only to return to find his wish and desire shattered at the hands of cruel destiny. |
