Abstract: This study entitled "A study of English Vocabulary Achievement of Fifth Graders in Ilam District" attempts to explore the achievement of vocabulary included in the English textbook of grade five.The objectives of the study were to find out students' achievement of English Vocabulary items used in English textbook of Grade Five at public schools in Ilam District, in terms of gender and to suggest some recommendations for pedagogical implications.The researcher constructed a set of written questionnaire as the main instrument for data collection. The data was provided by the 48 students studying at public schools of Ilam district. The researcher selected six schools and eight students from each school using random sampling procedure. The data obtained were analyzed,evaluated and interpreted using descriptive approach and simple statistical tools i.e. mean, and percentage. The findings of the study showed that the English vocabulary achievement of the fifth graders was found satisfactory in total but while doing school wise analysis the students in total, highest vocabulary achievement were found satisfactory in School 'B'and School 'D'.It was also found that boys' achievement of English vocabulary was better than girls in total.The disparity in English vocabulary achievement was found in different schools. The present work is divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with general background, review of related literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with methodology, which includes sources of data collection and limitation of the study. The third chapter includes analysis,and interpretation of data. Findings and recommendations are given in the four chapters. The sample of test items, answers of the students and references are given in the appendices.
