Identity Crisis of Tara Lata in Bharati Mukherjee's Desirable Daughters

Abstract

In this research, an attempt has been made to analyze a protagonistTara Lata'squest for her female identity in Bharati Mukhrejee'sDesirable Daughters. Tara, the protagonist of the novel,couldnot get her real female stable identity throughout the novel be itinHindu patriarchal society or in American society. InIndian patriarchal society, she couldnot get her identity due to societal norms and values. More or less,Tara enjoys the freedom in American society as American women do. But,at the meantime she returns to India as she couldnot get the real self whichhinders her tostableidentity.The main cause of her identity crisis is the patriarchy which hinders her to create a female identity because her upbringing was in purely traditional society. Tara left American freedom because she was followed by patriarchalethics and morality which follows her throughout her life and could not create a new self.
