Abstract: The present study entitled"Proficiency of Grade Nine Students in Understanding Sports News”was an attempt to find out the reading proficiency of grade nine students in sports news. The main objective of this study was to find out the reading proficiency of sports news of grade nine boys and girls. Along with this objective, the comparison has been made between different schools and test items.The researcher collected the data from, both primary and secondary sources to accomplish the task.The primary sources of the data were forty students of grade nine from one government and another private school in chitwan district. Different books, journals,theses etc. were the secondary sources of data. The population of the study i.e. forty informants was selected through judgemental sampling using simple random sampling method. Three different test items were used as research tools for data collection. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted using the tabulation.After studying the data, the findings were drawn. The main findings of the study are:the students of grade nine could only solve 76% test items in average, the boy students have better proficiency in understanding of the sports news than that of girl students , private school's students have the better performance than the government school's students and students felt more difficult in understanding the cricket news than basketball and football news. This thesis consists of four chapters: introduction, methodology, analysis and interpretation and findings and recommendations. The first chapter deals with a brief introductory survey of the related area of the study including general background,literature review, objectives and significance of the study. The second chapter includes the methodology: sources of data, population of the study, sampling procedure and tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study. Similarly, chapter three deals with analysis and interpretation of the data.The data have been analyzed and interpreted with help of statistical measures and chapter four incorporates findings, recommendations and pedagogical implications of the study.
