Abstract: This study entitled ‘Effectiveness of Reading Short Stories in Developing Students’ Writing Skills' aimed at finding out the effectiveness of reading short stories in developing students’ writing skill at secondary level (IX and X). I used non-random purposive sampling procedure to select the students (24) of grade IX and X studying in Vaishnabi Secondary School, Kirtipur, Kathmandu. As I followed an experimental research design, I used pre-tests and post-tests as the tools of data collection. The collected data have been presented in tables and analyzed and discussed quantitatively using mean and percentage. The major findings showed that engaging the students in reading short stories is significant in developing students’ writing skill. The experimental group increased 37% achievement in the post-test of writing skill after they were engaged in reading short stories before their writing lessons for two weeks. Engaging the students in reading short stories during the class was proved to be an effective way of developing students’ writing skills. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introductory chapter. It includes background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key terms. The second chapter deals with theoretical and conceptual framework of the study. The third chapter deals with methodology which incorporates research design and method, population, sample and sampling strategies, field/site of the study, data collection tools and techniques, data collection procedures and data analysis and interpretation procedure. The fourth chapter deals with the rigorous analysis of data and interpretation of results along with the summary of the findings. The fifth chapter presents the conclusion and recommendations of this research.
