Abstract: The overarching aim of the study entitled Comparative Study on Essay Writing Proficiency of grade X students Between Community and Institutional Schools intends to find out the essay writing ability of Grade X students of Rolpa district and compare the essay writing ability of the students of both community schools and institutional schools. The sample population was purposively taken from both community and institutional schools of Rolpa district. Four schools (i.e two community and two institutional schools) were purposively selected for the study. Twelve participant students were selected from each four school adopting a purposive non random sampling procedure. Survey design was used to complete this quantitative research. Subjective test was constructed and administrated to collect data. The study found that institutional school students performed better than community school students in writing essay. More than fifty percentages of students scored above average. This study comprises five chapters. First chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, significance of the study, delimitations of the study and operational definitions of the key terms. The second chapter consists of the review of the related theoretical literature, implications of the study and conceptual framework. In the same way, chapter three includes design of the study, population, sample and sampling strategy, research tools, source of data, data collection procedure, data analysis and interpretations and ethical considerations. The fourth chapter is about analysis of collected data. The final chapter deals with findings, conclusion and recommendations which are summed up from the analysis and interpretation of the collected data for the purpose of research. The references and appendices have been included in the last part of the thesis.
