Abstract: | In both of the novel, Mary and Maria, Wollstonecraft shows the desire of exhibiting the misery and oppression, peculiar to women that arises out of these two novels. In my study, I have found that the heroines disregard the social norms and values. They do not give much importance to the patriarchal laws, values and customs. The characters like Maria and Jemima suffer heavily from the male dominated society but they do not give up their life and finally established themselves. On the other hand, the character like Mary flies from patriarchal society and shows how a woman can live and serve to whole community without any help from man. |
