Abstract: This is the era of communication. Effective Communication is possible by the harmonious use of sentences. Especially in oral communication and in free writing proper use of situational varieties of sentences increases harmoniousness. The central intention of this research is to see whether the free writing of secondary level students is really effective or not. This thesis entitled "A Study on the Use of Sentence Varieties in Free Writing" is an attempt to find out the recent trends of use of various types of sentences and to find out the most popular variety of sentences used in free writing. For this, the researcher collected and analysed essays (primary data) written by 40 students of Chitwan District in which total five schools consisting three institutional and two community schools of village and town were the sample population. The primary data were analysed by using the descriptive as well as simple statistical method. It was found that students mostly preferred to use declarative, simple, present and active form of sentences in their free writing. Basically, students were found least interested to use interrogative, imperative, exclamatory and optative sentences in their free writing. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the general background, review of related literature, objectives, the definition of terms and significance of the study. The second chapter consists of the methodology in which the sources of data, sampling procedures, tools for data collection, process of data collection and limitations of the study are mentioned. The third chapter contains analysis and interpretation of the data. Lastly, the fourth chapter comprises the findings and recommendations of the study.
