Abstract: This study attempts to find out the use of pictures in teaching vocabulary. It has been carried out practically and comparatively. To carry out this research, thirty students of grade-V from the government school "Shree Rastra Primary School Govindpur" Pato, Saptari, were selected as sample population. A test consisting of five different test items as the main tool for data collection. A pre-test was given before starting teaching to determine the proficiency of the students. Then, they were divided into two groups on the basis of the odd- even serial number according to the individual scores obtained in the pre-test. After dividing them into two groups, both groups were taught the same subject matter. The only difference between group 'A' and group 'B' was that pictures were used for teaching vocabulary in group 'A' and the usual teaching technique i.e. teaching in learner's mother tongue was used in group 'B'. After the completion of teaching, a post-test (the same test) was given. Then, the results of both pre-test and post-test were compared to determine the role of pictures in teaching. The main finding of this thesis is that teaching vocabulary using pictures is more effective than teaching without them. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Each chapter is divided into different sub-chapters. The first chapter deals with general background of the study, review of the literature, objective of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology, data gathering procedure and limitations of the study. The third chapter deals with analysis, interpretation and presentation of the data. The chapter four deals with findings and recommendations. It is dealt with the help of analysis and interpretation of the collected data. The final part of the thesis includes references and appendices.
