Status Of Rescued Women And Girls :A Case Study of Maiti Nepal Rehabilitation Centre, Kathmandu

Abstract

Trafficking is a global issue requiring national and international concern. Women and girls involved in trafficking, experience various forms of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse while they are in brothels. These women and girls when rescued are undertaken by NGOs in their rehabilitation centre. This research is proposed to focus on the socio-economic background of the rescued women and girls. Several factors relating to this topic are theoretically and practically discussed to analyse their existing situation in the process of rehabilitation and reintegration. The main objectives of the study are: 1)To find out the socio-economic background of rescued women and girls, 2)To find out the rehabilitation and reintegration process of RW/S and 3)To analyse the changing attitude of RW/S living in rehabilitation centre. Quantitative data were analysed from the field survey at Maiti Nepal Rehabilitation Centre, Kathmandu. Information obtained from 27 respondents was of great experience to understand the existing situation of rescued women and girls. This research is the discussion of the various possible challenges, strategies and support system in terms of the social, economic, political and institutional obstacle. An important conclusion drawn from this study is the necessity to focus on poor socio- economic status of trafficked/rescued women and girls who had returned to Nepal .Many respondents who were currently resident at rehabilitation centre have not gained maximum level of recovery. So, the effort is needed from all sectors to facilitate them with higher degree of opportunities in terms of skill and income generating activities to upgrade their living as well as thinking condition. Last but not the least this research also provides recommendations on how existing efforts may be made more effective to support rescued women and girls for their social and economic development in the process of rehabilitation and reintegration.
