Title: Effectiveness of Pre-reading Activities in Teaching English Reading

Abstract: The present study was carried out to find out the effectiveness of pre-reading activities in teaching reading. For this purpose, eighty students from the five government schools representing sixteen students from each school were selected. Five government aided secondary schools of Tanahun district were selected using simple random sampling and sixteen students of grade-X from each school were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Six reading texts with subjective and objective questions were prepared as questionnaires to the selected students. Among six reading texts, texts A, B and C with subjective and objective questions were given to participants without doing pre-reading, activities. Likewise texts D, E and F with subjective and objective questions were given to them by doing pre-reading activities. Then effectiveness of Pre-reading activities was analyzed from the collected data. The research concluded that students' performance by doing pre-reading activities was better than without doing pre-reading activities in reading activities. The first chapter of this thesis consists of introduction, review of literature, objectives of the study and significance of the study. The second chapter deals with the methodology adopted for the study under which sources and tools of data collection and the limitation of the study are included. The third chapter deals with analysis and interpretation of data. The data are analyzed using statistical tools such as tables, charts etc and descriptive tools such as description, comparison analysis etc. The fourth chapter presents the summary of the findings and some recommendations have been made on the basis of analysis and interpretation. The final part of the thesis includes appendices and references.
