Title: English Proficiency of Speakers of the Magar and Nepali Languages

Abstract: The present study aims at finding out the English proficiency of Magar and Nepali students studying at secondary level of Rupandehi district and compare their proficiency. For carrying out the research, eighty grade ten students from ten government schools were taken as the sample population. To fulfil the objectives, the researcher used purposive judgmental non-random sampling procedure technique for selecting the sample students. The researcher prepared four sets of test items. For testing listening, he used a tape recorder and asked the students to listen to the text three times and answer the questions followed. For speaking skill, he provided them with proper situations and asked them to deal with them accordingly. For reading, he provided them with the comprehension passages and asked them to answer the questions given. Finally, for writing skill, he provided them with some problems to solve in writing. The major finding of this study is that the speakers of the Nepali language have higher English proficiency in comparison to the speakers of Magar. The study contains four chapters. The first chapter deals with introduction that includes general background, importance of the English language, English language in Nepal, language testing, testing language skills, importance of language testing, language proficiency, introduction of Magar language, review of related literature, objectives, significance of the study and definition of specific terms. Chapter two is concerned with the methodology adopted in the collection of data. It includes sources of data, population of the study. Sampling procedure, tools for data collection, process of data collection, and limitations of the study. Similarly, chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of data. Finally, chapter four deals with the findings, of the study.
