Abstract: This study entitled “English for Specific Purposes: A Case of Waiter Course” was conducted to find out communicative functions and grammatical categories, i.e. tense and voice used in waiter training courses. The study was conducted in waiter courses of five institutions of Kathmandu valley.These institutions were selected through judgmental non-random sampling procedure and the courses of these institutions were analyzed through observation. The researcher read and re-read courses of the waiters until he got required data. From this study, it was found that communicative functions such as socializing, getting things done and expressing and finding out intellectual attitudes were more frequently used than others. Similarly, non past tense and active voice were more frequently found in the waiter courses. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one is an introductory part which includes general background, the review of the related literature, objectives of the study, significance of the study and some specific terms which are used in this thesis. Chapter two deals with the methodology applied during the study. Chapter three consists of analysis and interpretation of the data. Chapter four consists of the findings and recommendations of the study. Lastly, this chapter is followed by reference and appendices.
