Abstract: The title of the study is "Reading Comprehension of Poetry and Prose by B. Ed. Students" The main purposes of the study were to find out the ability of B. Ed. students studying at various campuses of Kailali district to understand the literary texts and to find out the factors that hamper to understand the texts. For that 100 students were taken from the selected five campuses to accomplish the study. The campuses and the students were selected using simple random sampling procedures and 10 English teachers of B. Ed. were selected using judgemental sampling procedure. Two poems and two prose texts were selected and test items were developed to measure the reading comprehension of students and another two sets of questionnaires were also developed to find the causes of difficulty. Most of the students of B. Ed. are found better in prose texts than in poetry. The students' performance in matching items, multiple choices and true-false items is better than the performance in short comprehension questions, both in poetry and prose texts. Vocabularies and sentence structures are considered as the prime factors of difficulty in both poetry and prose texts. Matching items are found better in poetry but true false items are found better in prose texts. The thesis has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the background of language and literature and literature review. The second chapter deals with the methodology that was used in the study. Third chapter is concerned with the presentation, analysis and interpretation of the data and the last chapter deals with the findings and suggestions of the study.
